By August Winters - 4 March 2009 19

If there is a carillon player among us, please speak up.

I’m hoping to interview you for a documentary I will be making.

I avoided any jokes about playing the “air-carillon” – until now anyhow…

Aren’t the controls/keys similar to a pipe organ? One of those massive pipe organs you see in the cathederals in Europe? That is what I was lead to believe.

I have not seen the inside of the Carillon but a vague recollection of a photo or two shows that it does have a keyboard, but the keys are rather large and you use your hands rather than fingers to “play” a note/bell. Not sure if there is also a foot keyboard as well. Also, the lift apparently is rather, well, small.

Found a photo at ACT Heritage Library that shows the keyboard.

Oh I don’t know… isn’t that the Ides of March?

Maybe they are alarm bells you hear?

Beware.

“GOLD” seconded 😉

Actually, that could be one of the most interesting open days to attend around these here parts… they have a “function centre”?

there is an open day at the carillon next weekend.. im sure you will bump into one there..
(from an NCA email)

National Carilon Open Day
The National Carillon will hold an open day on Sunday 15
March, from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. The open day provides a rare
opportunity to see inside this striking musical instrument.
A great afternoon of entertainment is on offer with free tours,
carillon performances, face painting, balloon modelling and a
jumping castle. Carillonists will take visitors to the see the 55
bells, clavier and function room at the top of the tower which
boasts one of the best views in Canberra.

You could probably get in touch with one through the NCA. I think they manage the volunteer carillists.
