joy birch

Pork Hunt has noticed that the plaque for the newest piece of public art in Civic proclaims it was launched (unveiled surely) by a “Joy Birch”.

We’ve enquired of Joy Burch’s office what’s being done and how much it’s going to cost and will let you know.

This from the office that produced the Rolltide tweet.

UPDATE 05/12/12 10:00: We’ve had this explanation from Joy Burch’s office:

The plaque that is currently there was only ever meant to be temporary one. A more permanent will be installed soon-with the correct name.

The temporary plaque process intrigued us so we asked for more details to this response:

I would have to get some advice on that-not my normal area of expertise. I will see what I can find out.

We look forward to hearing all about it.

UPDATE 05/12/12 14:30: This explanation has now arrived:

So some further information on Plaques.

For all public artworks we install bronze plaques, these plaques take about 4 weeks to make and install. Given that for many public art launches the date of final installation and unveiling is not always known that far in advance we install temporary plaques for the purposes of the ceremony.

For the Other Side of Midnight a permanent plaque has been ordered and the supplier is pursuing with the foundry to have this available prior to Christmas.

Of course it makes sense to wait until the thing is launched to make the permanent plaque. That way people don’t whinge when it’s opened on a different date or by a different person and the plaque needs redoing.

But she won’t be able to sack the poor worker who screwed up because they have some issues outside work that are causing them lots of stress and disciplinary action will only inflame the situation to the point that they will have to sue the government department for harassment……

That was really funny. Tell it again.

You seriously can’t see the difference?

The plaque posted in this thread is ‘flat’ and looks like the black was digitally printed. The permanent plaque you linked to is made out of cast bronze or the like and is ‘3D’, with raised lettering, far more hard wearing.

This is most definitely a temporary plaque, and I have no doubt the replacement will be cast with raised lettering.

Nope, from the pics presented I can’t see that difference! Perhaps i’ve got sh1t eyesight…
If I worked/lived nearby them and gave a damn perhaps I’d go and check it myself, but it a no from me on both counts! Hahahaha!

1. Minister is a retard.
2. Staffers are all retards.
3. Directorate is just full of retards.
4. ACT taxpayers pay for this incompetent shit.

And:

Given that for many public art launches…

I forgot we are the D-grade public art capital of the world.

..because it looks *so* much like a temporary plaque (It looks the same as all the other paques at art installations. e.g. http://the-riotact.com/on-the-road-again-at-lyons-shops/60948 ). I wonder what the difference between it and the ‘permanent’ one will be? My guess is only the corrected typo! Hahahaha!

Couldn’t you just knock the “I” off with a cold chisel and solder on a “U” in situ?

Maybe that’ll happen to the new plaque (in reverse). He-he.

Nah, get rid of the ‘R’, put in a ‘T’.

Doesn’t look very temporary to me. A temporary one to me would have stick on letters and stuff like that. And if using temporary plaques is a planned ACT Govt activity, might I suggest somebody’s budget could usefully do with having a chainsaw taken to it.

And, to nitpick a bit, the word “launched” bothers me. Does one “launch” a piece of artwork? I’d have thought “unveiled” is more accurate.

Just change to way it was meant to be spelled, ‘Berk’, and leave it at that.

Also, this is a tiny amount of money. Who cares?

Well, clearly quite a lot of Canberrans do because this “work and rework” BS happens time and time again. Each time means more money that has to be found from borrowings, other projects or deeper in our pockets.

Probably be cheaper and easier to get Joy to change her name by deed poll 🙂

I’m still trying to figure out who “John Stanhope” is – apparently he opened my gym a few years back.

Unquestionably a bullshit excuse, but what if the mistake was make by the company who made the plaque? Then it will be replaced free of cost to the good taxpayers of the ACT.

Why do they feel as if they have to lie?

How about the truth? Someone stuffed up, sorry, we’ll fix it.

Not some obvious bullshit about temporary plaques.

Seriously. Lying is just digging the hole deeper. You stuffed up, someone relied a little too much on spell-check, mistakes were made, move on. Instead, you come up with the most blatant bloody lie?

Joy Burch could just decide that she doesn’t care that much that she’ll spend taxpayer money to replace the plaque. I think that decision would be well received.

‘…only ever meant to be temporary…’

What a load of cobblers. I say that as someone who spent a few years as a public servant looking after road projects that often involved an opening and a plaque.

what a bulls*** excuse

It should stay as it is. (or changed at cost to her)

Now with a response of sorts from the Minister’s office.

Calm down everyone.

Did she push it out to see, or fire it into space?

This really, really pisses me off.

The plaque will have to be re-made, and some proofreading incompetent will be told to lift his/her game.

Meanwhile, the citzens of Canberra will be required to cough up another $grand to remove and replace the rubbish installed.

Cos these things are normally glued so that they are really dificult to remove.

Damn right. Poofreading is really important.

Totally agree. You’d think they can get their freaking Minister’s name correct given they work for her.
