Chief Minister Stanhope is calling for nominations from the ACT for the 2009 Australian of the Year awards.

“I urge all Canberrans to consider nominating someone who may have achieved excellence in their chosen field, made a significant contribution to the local or Australian community, or acted as an inspirational role model to others.”

Categories are:

— Australian of the Year
— Senior Australian of the Year
— Young Australian of the Year
— Australia’s Local Hero

“Nominations can be made online at http://www.australianoftheyear.gov.au/, by picking up a nomination form at any Commonwealth Bank branch or by phoning 1300 655 193.”

But before doing that, why not let us know who you’re nominating?

John McLean sounds like a very deserving Australian indeed. I will vote for him … especially now I have discovered that Thumper is really a Disney rabbit impersonator!

: )

I think the Bruce Willis guy is spelled McClane (weird).

I thought John McLean was Bruce Willis’ alter-ego?

and i was waiting for that….

check out john on the 31st of august on 60 minutes, or australian story on the 8th of september.

I thought John McLean was Bruce Willis’ alter-ego?

Magnet mart guy no longer appears in the ads. ONe of the embarassing things about being involved in local theatre is that I know the people in the new ads – they’re good actors usually, but … ow, script not doing them any favours!

Argh, beat me to it! Oi!

Well given I don’t watch the Olympics, let alone the paralympics, I’m only vaguely aware of John Maclean, and I’m only aware of who Lee Kernagan is because I googled him after I noted he was on an Australian of the Year advertising plaque but had no idea who he was

Let alone any of the others.

maelinar,

john was hit by a truck during a training ride for a triathlon on the highway near his home in sydney. left him a paraplegic. he was in the panthers a grade as well.

the reason that I think that he is an inspiration to us all is that he has completed the Hawaiian Iron man marathon within able bodied time, swum the english channel and competed at the paralympics – he didn’t finish, he stacked, but this has only made him more determined to continue to try and better himself.

he is one of the most down to earth people you can ever meet, and his face lights up when he talks about the foundation, and the work he is doing – making disabled kids’ lives a little easier.

he set up and rode in the K4K (kilometers for kids) charity ride, riding from sydney to melbourne, with some of the corporate sponsors, my MD was one.

they donated a bed, wheelchair or other mobility aid to several kids along the way. These donations were raised by the sponsorship of the ride, and by ordinary folk like myself.

Probably because you can’t even name prime possum’s co-host.

I say, Prime Possum for Prime Minister!

don’t pay attention to names that much…

My vote goes to Prime Possum.

In fact, why don’t we organise a Prime Possum for Australian of the Year email campaign. While we’re at it let’s also vote him/her as Senior Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year and Australia’s Local Hero.

You know he/ she deserves it.

why not prime possum’s co-host?

Phred Bear. He’d hate it.

What about Thumper for his tireless voluntary efforts in maintaining RA ?

good for RA, but not many others would know that he isn’t a disney rabbit.

My vote for Australia’s Local Hero would have to Todd Carney as he always acts like a fricken hero.

i will be voting for John Maclean, for the reasons that i have posted on RA before. I will also be cheering for him at the paralympics. if you want to know more about John, here is his web address:

http://www.jmf.com.au/

He works to help disabled children through his foundation, who raises funds to allow the purchase of wheelchairs and other mobility devices for these kids. He is well known on wide world of sports and provides mentoring services to my company.

regardless of who you think the Australian of the year should be, please cheer him on at the paralympics – Maclean, along with his rowing partner Kathryn Ross will compete in the TA2X Adaptive Pairs competition at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games.
