Who sold housing in a drained Lake Burley Griffin better? [With poll]

This in from Zoo’s Jimi Bostock:

Not sure if you know, but the annual Australian Marketing Institute pitch was on yesterday.

It pitted us (Zoo) and Grey against each other to answer a brief of convincing Canberrans to drain the lake for housing.

Andrew Barr was the judge and he had advisers including Catherine Carter.

We won the advisers 2 to 1, which if we were doing it Gruen style would have seen us take out the big prize but alas Andrew went with Grey … perhaps on the basis that it was based on getting Hugh Jackman to sell the message

Anyway, thought it might be a nice story for you

Here’s the brief:

And here’s Zoo’s offering:

And finally the winning entry from Grey.

Who do you think took the biscuit?

Maybe it’s the fact I never watch or listen to commercials but they were both woeful, I couldn’t even watch all of they second one. Are all the advertising people part time Uni students?

Bundah you’re right. I’m still not even 30 yet! Sounds spooky but not in a good way.

The gaol would flood first – that’s where all the water in Googong Dam goes if the wall fails.

It’s been tried a couple of times although I suspect you weren’t around for the 1976 flood when the half completed Googong Dam was at risk of collapse under the weight of water behind it. Queanbeyan Cemetery was flooded and there were many bodies washed downstream into Lake Burley Griffin so it was pretty intense.

Nah let’s just flood Queanbeyan.

No question Grey got the award but the piece de resistance would be to divert the waters of the Molonglo to inundate the Legislative Assembly, win win!

Grey’s had a couple of laughs, but very little original thinking. In fact so derivative the jokes would have worked with any subject. Points to Zoo on bother with artists impressions, but Katy G starting the pitch was bland and overall a bit of a snooze fest.

So I’ll do what the ACT Government often does and just give the award to some interstate marketing firm.

I was at the forum yesterday … I was actually surprised that the Hugh Jackman one got up.

The other one seemed to be quiet plausible and the Gray one seemed to be unrealistic … the guy presenting it even made a joke about Hugh’s fee …

But, maybe I am missing the point … in the brochure for the conference it mentioned showcasing commercial creativity … I would have thought the first one fitted that

But we all had a good laugh and I think the forum is a brilliant idea … will definitely go back next year

The idea sells itself. We need more infill and there’s a lovely flat bit in the middle that just sits there. Would be bike friendly and could have a mixture of high and medium density to blend with the existing suburbs. Canals or restoring the original river could provide parks and waterfront.

Nah, it’s flood prone; which means caravan parks and golf courses are the go.

As a compromise we could lower the lake and expand the islands to similar effect. Add a few bridges and huzzah.

The Grey pitch is much better! Are you looking for an unofficial win, ZOO? Don’t think you’re going to get it here.

The people seem to be with Andrew Barr so far on this one.

Yes the Grey entry is funnier, but I’d love an apartment on a LBG canal overlooking the Parliamentary Triangle.

Hugh is dead right about the ducks, they’re forever soiling the fountains in front of Old Parliament House.

Unfortunately, any money from land sales would go the Federal Government though because LBG is national land.

My 2c is the Grey offering was much funnier, and showed a pretty sharp understanding of what passes for thinking in the ACT Government.
