Territory And Municipal Services are in a tizz over recent acts of vandalism:

“Glebe Park has been the latest target of vandalism with the destruction of 29 in-ground sprinkler heads at a total repair cost of $4,000,” Jane Carder, Manager for the Place Management unit in
TAMS said.

“Vandalism costs in Glebe Park have so far this year totalled approximately $70,000, damages have been found at the toilet facility and park furniture, and shrubbery has been stolen, bins set on fire, graffiti in some areas and damage to the playground’s rubber softfall surface.”

Ms Carder said that so far this financial year over $100,000 would be needed to repair the vandalism to the playground and toilet facilities of the Fadden Pines District Park.

“Already this year there have been more than 35 newly planted young trees damaged or stolen from our urban open spaces. City Rangers are currently investigating situations which involved the poisoning of mature public trees,” Ms Carder said.

“Recently a significant tree on rural land near Rob Roy Nature Reserve was also maliciously cut down with an axe.

TAMS would like you to report vandalism so they can get it investigated as soon as possible. Contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to Canberra Connect on 13 22 81.

A quick look around Glebe Park this morning appeared to demonstrate a park in pretty good shape, which is a credit to TAMS.

Just the broken bench above, a couple of very minor bits of tagging, and an abandoned shopping trolley (thought we’d legislated those away?)

Maybe it would be wise to install camera’s, I’m sure that would stop these morons!

They’ve certainly stopped robberies, shoplifting, assaults etc. Wait, no they haven’t.

The people who do this sort of thing are vermin. Or, to use the American vernacular, varmints. I have a varmint rifle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varmint_rifle) and I’d honestly be very happy to employ it on these particular varmints. They destroy without thought for their own distorted sick pleasure, and they contribute nothing. They are of no use, and we’d be well rid of them.

It is sad that people like that exist. Interesting how for the money they’ve spent on repairing vandalism, they could have hired a security guard to patrol the area for 8 hours a day. Or maybe they should put in a tonne of cameras.

Well the “guard” better have an Uzi or a Dillon Mini because when the crowds of druggies, rapists, durnk party goers and assorted trades people come out after dark, he’s going to be very out numbered.

As for cameras, they’ve got them. And they’re so fuzzy, particularly after dark, that you can’t tell if it’s Arthur or Martha. And rumour has it that after dark, certain people in Glebe Park don’t conform to either of those anyway 🙂

Maybe it would be wise to install camera’s, I’m sure that would stop these morons!

Whatever happened with those Guardian Angels, Isn’t this their department?

Personally I think it’s par the course for Canberra. I see things in other cities that would be vandalised in Canberra. For example, electric bus stop signs that tell you when the next bus is coming- they would be trashed by young thugs if they were installed here. All because they have nothing to do.

scum hole?

snip!

haven for crime.

Nothing like a bit of hyperbole. It’s hardly a haven of crime. Except for a couple of recent events I can’t recall all that many reported crimes at all, and definitely no more than any other part of Canberra.

That new stage on the other hand is an ugly building, and what was the point of putting a roof over it with holes in it ?

No revenue to be made from putting cameras in here. The problem is the housing tennants across from the park.

Agreed. I’m of the opinion that a number of problems in the area are due to the residents of the “smacky-flats” opposite Glebe Park.

It’s a mixture: the toilets are a great meeting spot for the boys; druggies; drunks walking through looking for something to destroy + the ABC flats………

I’d say the sprinkler heads being destroyed would be a result of people kicking/jumping on them while they are turned on.

“Who vandalises 29 in-ground sprinkler heads?”

Knowing full-well that my suggesting of bulldozing is a moot point due to heritage listing

“moot point” means the opposite of what you think it means.

In contemporary langauge “moot point” can be used in reference to an argument that is invalid or no longer applicable.

A moot point is one which we can debate all we want but it won’t change. In this case we can debate the merits of bulldozing it all we want, but it is heritage listed and so is safe from the ‘dozers.

At least, that is what I understand a moot point to be – perhaps I am different from the majority of the population?

Cameras don’t stop crime, they just record it as you all know well.

sounds like it needs some cameras, and possibly to be locked at night

Knowing full-well that my suggesting of bulldozing is a moot point due to heritage listing, what solutions do the rest of you have to fixing the crime issues within this scum hole?

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate open public spaces when they are a useful public ammenity, but Glebe Park is poorly designed and in the wrong area to be practical for much at all. I work nearby and the only regular use I see is by a few dozen public servants eating lunch. A park of this size, cost, (and supposed value) should be a hive of community activity, not just a haven for crime.

The giant elm trees in Glebe Park are special and becoming more-so. Since Dutch Elm Disease ran riot in Europe, it’s rare to see giant european elms. We don’t have Dutch Elm Disease, yet, thanks to the vigilant folk opening peoples’ luggage at our international airports, but it’s sadly a matter of time before we do.

I’ve heard anecdotaly that our big healthy elms are something of an unofficial tourist attraction.

Give this guy a rifle and empower him to shoot anyone committing vandalism.

Swift and brutal vengeance will keep the crime rates down.

Glebe Park should be bulldozed out of existence and a new park constructed in a more visible and accessible area – for example the carpark opposite Mooseheads. Sell off half of Glebe for development to pay for the costs, and turn the other half into car parking.

To be fair
Recycling Glebe is not an option
Open space is priceless
Lose it and we all suffer
Lose you, sir, and we might win

Going to move the historic trees are you?

Build taller fences and lock it at night……it is such a nasty place at night – for all sorts of reasons.

Scum like these vandals won’t be happy until the whole city is just a smoking wasteland.
