Chief Minister Stanhope is calling for entries for the “CityNews Canberra Artist of the Year Award”:
- “I encourage all Canberrans who value and treasure the role artists play in our city’s life to nominate a local arts practitioner for CityNews Canberra Artist of the Year,” Mr Stanhope said.
“Nominations can be made for individuals practising in any art form and working within a 100-kilometre radius of Canberra.”
Nominations can be made by email to jorian@citynews.com.au by close of business Friday November 21. Nominations should include contact details and a few paragraphs in support of the nomination.
Apparently this is CityNews’ first year sponsoring the 15 year old prize.
The winner will be announced at the Canberra Critics’ Circle Awards on December 9.
Can anyone provide more details of the Canberra Critics’ Circle as they appear to have a very limited online presence? Is it just Jorian Gardner, Helen Musa, and Stuart Roberts meeting for a drink or is there more to it?

- CANBERRA’S pre-eminent Artist of the Year Award will this year be judged directly by the Canberra Critics’ Circle under a new sponsorship by “CityNews”.
The award is the major honour at the annual Canberra Critics Circle Awards night presentation of the region’s premier arts prizes. It will be held this year in the Canberra Museum and Gallery on December 9.
For the first time in its 15-year history, a panel of reviewers from the Canberra Critics’ Circle will select the top award and the public and the arts community are encouraged to nominate candidates.
The $1000 award honours the creativity and excellence of an outstanding Canberra artist in any art form. The artist should be a person working within a 100km radius of Canberra who has, in the past 12 months, added lustre to the reputation of the national capital through inspiring art practice.
“We jumped at the chance of sponsoring the Canberra Artist of the Year award,” said “CityNews” editor Ian Meikle.
“We wanted to publicly reaffirm our relationship with the arts community and underscore the paper’s long-standing commitment to covering the arts scene with local, engaged writers and critics. We know our readers like it and I think they will share the pride we have in supporting this splendid award.
“We’re also pleased that the Critics’ Circle is prepared to take on the judging role. It was important to us that the award be seen as having the widest-possible input.”
