Simon Corbell is flirting with boycott laws by encouraging you to spend your dollars with businesses that have been accredited as active recyclers.
“The ACTSmart Business and Office awareness campaign will help people identify and support the many organisations that are actively recycling and reducing waste to landfill,” Mr Corbell said.
“We now have more than 200 sites involved in the programs, a fantastic achievement in the time since their launch in August last year. To date, 27 business and office sites have achieved accreditation under the program and are reducing waste to landfill by a total of about 80 tonnes each month.
“By looking out for the ACTSmart logos, we can reward those organisations that are recycling and encourage more to follow suit.”
Curiously though in promoting this Simon plans to spend ACT Government money advertising in the dead tree media:
In 2008, the amount of commercial and industrial waste sent to landfill rose by 14% to 98,000 tonnes, with more than three-quarters of this material that could have been recycled, such as paper, food waste and mixed recyclables.
The awareness campaign will include television, radio and print advertising and information displays at shopping centres and community events.
“This campaign will allow people to show their support for ACTSmart recyclers,” Mr Corbell said.
Now if they spent that money with online media they wouldn’t be supporting the consumption of all that paper which could have been recycled, but as he notes much of it isn’t.
