Why should the gov't bail em out

Government agencies should write fair work requirements into their contracts, check employers’ credentials and histories, and thereby not contract shonky employers in the first place.

One would think that the law should require employers to deposit employees’ wages in a protected bank account, at least weekly, and that, in the event of bankruptcy, that account should be quarantined against any claims except those of employees.

The shonky subcontractor business (thanks to John Hunt the Coward and his Mad Monk mate) leaves people who should, by rights, have been employees, without any protection.

The real losers are the businesses who supplied goods and material to the contractors – is the CFMEU going to shed a tear for them?
There is no reason why ratepayers should underwrite the losses of employees and subcontactors.
I lost a heap of money when FAI hit the wall and no one gave me any support. Every trade union (except possibly the HSU) should have sinking fund to assist their members at a time like this.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d hate to be owed money due to a company collapse, but it is in no way the responsibility of a client to ensure the workers do not miss out on their entitlements. As it stands now the ACT Gov’t will probably end up out of pocket.

As for the term “model client” could you get any more of a self serving wanker term from the CFMEU?
