Why yes, I am quite sick of seeing them

Street signage

Do two wrongs make a right?

It seems amongst the things the ACT Government DOES have money for is throwing these signs down around Civic to harrass smokers and non-smokers alike.

If only they’d spent the money getting the bright young things getting about in their t-shirts putting these signs out to clean up instead.

I think I can comment as an ex-smoker. You are addicted to nicotine as a smoker. Much as many of you are ‘not addicted’ to caffeine and alcohol as two legal drugs.

Have some understanding. Governments should somehow incentivise quitting, via the tax deduction side of things, or similar. Positive action, not penalties.

I quit 12 years ago. Before that, I tried to rationalise my behaviour, unsuccessfully.
I did not litter the streets.

The practice of smoking does not necessarily spread cigarette butts, either.

And when I look at Australian AIDS statistics, I get:
Male 9,759
Female 553

Gee, I wonder what would account for this huge imbalance? It couldn’t be because Females are a whole lot less likely to meet up in public toilet blocks to get themselves sodomized by total strangers, could it?

I wonder – what would these geniuses do about AIDS?
Solution #1: Provide condoms.
Solution #2: Provide stickers vilifying sodomites.

HIV is spread by a number of practices not exclusively through anal sex or as you term it sodomy. Also the practice of anal sex does not necessarily spread HIV. Really bad analogy.

This is a classic example of idiot management by the @#$&wit wannabe-communists who run our town.

The problem: Cigarette butts everywhere.
Solution #1: Provide ashtrays.
Solution #2: Provide stickers vilifying smokers.

Well you were all whinging about butts on the pavement, I don’t walk around smoking, and I can give up, I am strong willed, and going to a hypnotist won’t work for me as I’Ve been told from a hypotist that I will stop when I want to, and I have in the past, gone cold turkey, it’s all a state of mind.

I saw thw exact same image on stickers in Central Europe recently. The number of people smoking in Vienna/Prague/Budapest is a real shock to a non-smoker like me from a generally smoke-free place like Australia!

This type of signage is typical of bureaucracy’s lack of imagination in attempting to solve a problem. When presented with a predicament their default reaction is to erect a sign without any apparent consideration of a real solution. Is it more likely that some smokers toss their butts on the ground because they forgot that they shouldn’t and needed a sign to remind them or is that they’ve been unable to locate an ashtray since the 70’s? As a society we’ve degenerated to a point that a lack of a sign telling you not to do something is now a valid legal defence in many situations. It’s pathetic! I had a young bloke cut across my yard recently and when I pulled him up he actually said that I should erect a sign telling people not to!

Let’s face it, some people are pigs and some of these pigs smoke and no amount of signage will change this, but a few public area ashtrays may…

Cheers

What happens if you put a still partly-lit butt into a bin? If enough people do it the bin will eventually catch fire. Thats why you normally (used to) have ashtrays provided separately to the bin space, somewhere to dispose of the butt which isnt full of flammable materials like paper.

Hmmm, that does seem to be a pretty valid point.

Cop out excuse. It is sooooooooo hard to squash the burning end against the bin lid, or under foot, and then place it in the bin, yes? Well, obviously, ’cause they usually find their way to the ground anyhow…

More ashtrays please!!!!!!!!

Less ashtrays around now ’cause less people smoke.

Fukn give up!! You won’t need ashtrays then.

To people who say “I can’t give up”, I say to you, think back to when you were a nonsmoker. No coughing, you had taste buds and money in your pocket…

More ashtrays please!!!!!!!!

What kind of indolent scum can’t be bothered walking 1.5 metres to throw their butt in the bin?

Smokers, clearly.

Ive found smokers will generally use ashtrays when theyre provided, the problem is that the number of ashtrays in public places is seriously diminishing.. and ..

I really hate seeing litter on the ground. It especially amazes me how you see bins with hundreds of cigarette butts scattered around them. What kind of indolent scum can’t be bothered walking 1.5 metres to throw their butt in the bin?

Yes – God forbid they *collect* them in the ashtray of their car for later disposal, *walk* to the nearest bin, or carry a small canister to collect them – until they see a bin in their way… Smokers tend to not be the greatest thinkers about their habit – just look at all the smokers on the grounds of the hospital smoking in front of “Smoking Banned” signs (now that smoking is banned from the Hospital precinct)… perhaps a good RA photo essay in the making?

I’m all for those stickers, though I haven’t seen how they’ve been “distributed” as yet…

Perhaps they should have used those limited numbers given “Community Service” the task of plastering them around…

Do two wrongs make a right? No, but three rights make a left.

are they the masses of blue shirted poms that are in the city at the moment?

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with encouraging smokers to take some responsibility for themselves.”

No, but do they have to be plastered multiple time across nearly every bin, road crossing, building wall, sign post etc etc.
