Hive Mind,
does anyone know of any (vaguely more) up to date directories of wifi hotspots in and around Canberra? The first link below looks the same as it did two years ago and second is gone baby gone.

Any pointers gratefully received.

Free wifi with excellent coffee is what I’m seeking here 🙂

Hi,

Free Canberra Wireless is just kicking off but the plan is to get free wifi internet access across Canberra by encouraging people to share their internet access through piggy-backing a small network “repeater” device called a Meraki on their networks which allows other people to connect to that network but prevents them from accessing your computers and files.

When you have multiple units in an area you create a mesh network, where the load is then balanced across multiple nodes – it’s also good for redundancy so if a node goes down there are others available. Also if an ISP has a gateway failure then people can switch to the Meraki wifi network to go through the other ISPs.

We’ve only got a handful of local networks in place – I run the only one in Amaroo at the moment. There are similar projects in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane and overseas – the most advanced being the network in San Francisco.

When I was last in there, the Wig and Pen had wireless internet reception. Plus the best beer in town.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I’ll definitely check some of these out.

My house. McDonalds if you have a Nintendo DS.

Cafe Deli Marco didn’t work for me when I tried it, but I’d recently upgraded to a new version of Linux and I probably hadn’t set something up properly.

The Pancake Parlour in Civic has open wifi and powerpoints at some tables. Very worthwhile for an hour or two if your house isn’t air conditioned (if summer ever arrives).

The Front in Lyneham has an excellent open hot spot and coopers pale for $5.

Cafe Deli Marco in Dickson has a closed spot but if you ask they’ll give you the password.

I haven’t tried these out myself (as until recently I was using iBurst for my mobile needs), but you may have to try these options:
