William Hovell Drive speed camera

Apparently speed cameras are installed in black spots and are NOT used for revenue raising. Driving along William Hovel Drive between Coulter Drive and Bindubi Street I noticed some construction going on. A length of Armco fence and a very large reinforcing tube to go into the ground. This is on the left heading towards town, just around a corner and over a hill.

Now surely they wouldn’t put a speed camera there????? I called the ACT Shopfront and was put through to a few places and no one seems to know anything about it at all.

Thanks to TAMS for the info but as JC said what an odd place to install an info sign. You will probably be on it and past it before you can read any message.

Well hang on. Didn’t they just say eastbound before Bindubi St? So if you’re heading East towards the city you’ll see the sign before Bindubi St. Parkes way blocked? Turn left and head up to Belconnen Way. Or perhaps southbound on the Tuggeranong Parkway.

TAMS why that location? On the stretch of road it is the dumbest place of the lot as it is just after a bend, one of the few bends actually. Surly the more sensible location would have been on one of the two straigher sections of the road.

Though as someone else mentioned in many ways pretty pointless. Once you get to where the sign is, even if you do get a chance to read it due to placement you are pretty much stuck anyway.

It is for a project to install signage on William Hovell Drive (eastbound before Bindubi Street) which allows us to put up traffic messages such as road safety or diversion information.
Similar signage has already been installed on Gungahlin Drive and the Tuggeranong Parkway.
Other signs are being installed on Yarra Glen and Hindmarsh Drive.

Awwwww, don’t ruin the conspiracy theories!

These brightly illuminated “information” signs, just like the portable solar powered ones are not safe in my opinion. I find that in dark conditions they are way too bright and are an unnecessary distraction at best. The intensity of those orange lamps often puts little bright dots in my vision for quite some time after looking at the message and obscures vision to some extent. Just as high beams dazzle drivers, these signs do the very same thing and they are intentionally placed in our field of vision.
As for the safety messages, I haven’t seen anything really effective or worthwhile on these bulletin boards yet. The money would be better spent on wages for our police to do some effective deterring with their presence on the roads.

The one on the parkway used to go dim at night.. somewhat after I mentioned it on here.

However its really dim now.. I’ve never seen it turned on in ages?

Is it broken?

The Tugg Parkway one hasn’t worked for months.

Thanks for the info TAMS. However wouldn’t it be better to have a variable message sign on Coulter Dve as you head towards William Hovell? Also one further back on William Hovell before Coppins Crossing? That way if there is an ‘incident’ from Bindubi street onwards you can divert via Coppins Crossing or turn off to Coulter and avoid whatever is going on. By the time I reach the location you are currently putting the sign in it will basically be telling me that I am stuck in traffic and I won’t be able to do anything about it (unless I do an illegal Uturn over the median strip)!

I’ve noticed the speed camera van on Hindmarsh coming down the hill between Dalrymple St and Jerra Ave. Apparently people step on the gas once the average speed camera stretch over Mt Mugga Mugga ends.

Great idea. Should be a couple of variable message signs on Parkes away too.

You called the Shopfront to ask what they were installing there? Just do the right thing on the road and you’ll be right 🙂

If true I’d love to hear their justification. More people have died in the section between Drake Brockman Drive and Coulter Drive. The section you mention is an 80kmh zone with decent separation between either direction. No doubt they think they can catch more people speeding there, even though I bet the stats would show it is the least dangerous part of William Hovell Drive.

It’s not a speed camera, it’s a SAFETY camera…
