The Canberra Times is reporting that WIN rules the roost in local TV ratings:

“The sixth ratings survey of the year had WIN with the largest audience share in Canberra of 27.7 per cent, ahead of its nearest rival, ABC1, with 23 per cent.

Prime came in third with 22.3 per cent, followed by Southern Cross Ten (18.8) and SBS-TV (8.1).”

Prime is hoping that Olympic saddos will carry them to victory in the next survey.

On TV I mostly watch...

yeah, The Nest was quite intriguing. They didn’t take the easy way out on that one. SBS is frequently superb. Bloody olympics, I tuned in tonight after the ABC news to watch Food Safari and it wasn’t on! Rort!

The Nest (SBS) followed by Big Love was one of the best nights of telly in a while.

the outrageous and unmissable Big Love (HBO production on SBS with top cinema actors including Bill Paxton, Jeannie Tripplehorn and the girl from Mamma Mia) – OMG what a show! This outwardly clean-cut, ex-Mormon dude actually has three gorgeous wives and a bedtime roster(!), which he juggles while trying to keep his shady business affairs afloat. Anyone know when Series 3 is coming?

I think it’s still being made in the US. At least it IS being made! And we see it for free, too. HBO costs big bikkies in the US.

Big Love is a cracker, one of the best things on TV in years. I love spotting the sites around SLC, too.

funnily, they had Up Periscope (or Down Periscope, that silly submarine film with Frasier in it) the other night, and the blokes who play Roman Grant and Frank Harlow(Bill’s nasty dad) were both in it as misfit crew members.

Cheers Tempestas!

According to HBO Series 3 starts Jan 2009. So SBS won’t have until later next year.

AngryH, while Gruen was totally addictive, it was still second to the outrageous and unmissable Big Love (HBO production on SBS with top cinema actors including Bill Paxton, Jeannie Tripplehorn and the girl from Mamma Mia) – OMG what a show! I’ll have to check it out mate thanks!

Bill Paxton will always be Hudson from Aliens to me though…

“Game over man! GAME OVER!”

I guess while we’re on the topic of programming, I’ve definitely found my favourite shows are far more accessible online, even shows that have been airing in the ‘fasttracked’ format or whatever spin they are putting on it. It’s just a lot easier to be in control of what you’re watching rather than settle into a regular time slot for a show only to have the network change it out of the blue without warning and have you either miss the episode or go outside and face the fact that your life is never gonna be as exciting as your favourite characters. I think we work hard all day and giving us dodgy programming is just mean.

Take a show like the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica, possibly the best sci-fi series EVER to be screened in my opinion. It was on for a while, then it dissappeared, where do you find it now, online. I know it’s not 100 per cent ethical, but neither is feeding someone sh*t after a hard days work when they want to relax.

Both 1 and 2 still carry local news, to their credit. I expect this is part of the reason they have done well in the ratings survey – and I hope the other channels are starting to realise this, the dumbkopfs!

I probably mostly watch Ten. If I’m going to watch television I’m probably in the mood for something vapid or escapist. I probably watch ABC and SBS after that, and then Win or Prime whenever something I want to watch is on.

To be honest I have to say I don’t watch tv nearly as much as I used to. I get my news online (TV News is rubbish including the ABC and SBS) as well as a lot of research and entertainment items, watch DVDs, and play Video Games.

On Foxtel I usually watch the Cartoon and Comedy Channels. I love boomerang, it takes me back to my childhood.

haha shanefos! It would seem we have the same theory!

Now if they could turn the volume down on WIN, the excitement up on PRIME and the personalities way-down on TEN we’d be living in a perfect world.

Oh and turn down the repetition on Foxtel and improve their reception.

And especially don’t touch the ABC on Wednesday nights, I love Wednesday nights on the ABC but they have to bring back the Gruen Transfer.

I don’t think I’m asking too much?

I think it’s because WIN obviously cater to the older market and they are doing a community service saving pensioners millions of dollars a year on hearing aid batteries…

I can hear McCleods Daughters all the way from Cootamundra when my nana watches it.

I do know that WIN drives me nuts whenever I am watching free-to-air because they seem to have the audio up a butt-load louder than the other stations.

yeah.. i don’t get why that is! Anyone?

General age of viewers means on average more hearing deficiencies so they over compensate.
Either that, or the people that are responsible for Harvey Norman ads are in control at Channel 9 too…

mmm, biased content or unbiased non-content…. tough choice.

(my point being that “Big Brother” and “Australian Idol” can’t really be biased…)

OMG! RALMFAO! P1, I think I love you!!!

I would be interested to know how many minutes of broadcast TV I watch for every minute of DVD, or otherwise recorded (thus no ads) shows I watch. It is surely much more then I watch on any one channel.

I don’t think there is any ratings survey during the Olympics???

I can’t be sure though…

Personally I’d say that the ABC struggles mightily to be balanced, but does tend to view the world from a narrow (if often commendable) set of perspectives.

“The ABC is a beautiful example of the type of programming you get from state sponsored outlets: full of bias; agenda barrows; and content that 80% of the television audience finds unacceptable.”
Ralph: You say bias I say balance. You sure you’re not David Barnett in disguise?

Another vote for the media center.

And PeterH, “Hero” and “House of Flying Daggers” are better IMHO. Same production team IIRC. Crouching Tiger is overrated

I have always loved the local and homely approach of WIN, first they appoint the very girl next door Jess, and then teamed it up with the slogan:

“when wind breaks, WIN news”.

I’ve got to agree the Chn 7 coverage is aimed squarely at the Brain dead ADD sufferers. SBS is a whole heap better. It’s sad that the “ratings” don’t differentiate between people who actively ‘watch’ a programme and those who stare blankly at the screen with vacant looks in their eyes.

are there olympics on?

If we all had a dollar for everytime they’ve shown that dumb Eddie the eel montage.

Agreed…the 7 coverage is average at best. Too much chopping & changing, no actual updates on what has been happening & no definition between live & replayed coverage.

Agreed here too – I have only been watching it intermittently because it’s driving me absolutely nuts. The worst thing for me has been those bloody montages of a bunch of slow motion clips that they seem to insist on sticking on after every ad break that seem to run for half the total segment. What the hell are they meant to achieve? They’re not to attract viewers – after all, we’re already watching (or at least I was until the 4th one where I snapped and turned it over to an interesting documentary on some cult or other that the ABC was screening). They’re not ads to make them money, so I’m damned if I can figure it out. I just find myself asking “isn’t there actual sport going on now that you could be covering?”. The answer seems to be “yeah, but we can’t be arsed – here, watch this same slow motion montage for the 5th time in the last hour and a half”.

The Olympics coverage on Prime is for those with ADD – far too much chopping and changing.

I have been mostly watching on SBS, which is where I watch most of my TV (Top Gear, Mythbusters, Cycling, *Real* nightly news).

missed crouching tiger on SBS, was on the web whilst my wife watched the opening ceremony on prime (and PVR’d it for the kids) – she “neglected” to mention that it was on.

If Prime is hoping that ‘Olympic saddos’ will carry them to victory in the next survey they’re sadly mistaken. I’m already watching the games solely on SBS as I cannot stand the offal being proffered as ‘sports broadcasting’ by 7. From the intelligence-insulting ‘Yum Cha’ in the morning to the smarmy ocker in a suit that is Matthew White in the evening there is absolutely nothing to recommend their coverage. And don’t get me started on the adverts. Or Anna Coren.

The Olympics coverage on Prime is for those with ADD – far too much chopping and changing.

The only time my TV turns on is to use my media center…

I’ve been watching Olympics on Prime, but generally steer clear of pov free to air content. The Olympics HD channel doesn’t look very HD though….

The ABC is a beautiful example of the type of programming you get from state sponsored outlets: full of bias; agenda barrows; and content that 80% of the television audience finds unacceptable.

Thanks, I was looking for the Fox option also. General comment….I’m unable to respond to most RiotACT polls because the options never seem to fit. They are always too extreme one way or the other, or just silly. Put up some sane polls answers & I’m sure you’d get a greater response.

Apologies, added now.

Normally we won’t alter polls once they’re live but as we only just sent it live not too much harm done.

Where’s the Foxtel option?

The only FTA TV I regularly watch is on ABC, so while helping Prime go for Gold during the Olympics I can’t get over Channel 7’s over the top pathetic slime ball TVCs. Wooaaah they lay on the sop and emotional crap thick at Ch7 these days.

there needs to be an option for pay tv
