WIN News doesn't know the difference between Lake Tuggeranong and Pine Island?

Reporting breaking news is hard and it’s understandable errors can be made.

But wouldn’t it be nice if the people making the local news bulletin knew the difference between Pine Island, on the Murrumbidgee River and Lake Tuggeranong?

So this is Pine Island:

And this is Lake Tuggeranong:

I’ll admit, they’re definitely both in Tuggeranong. I guess from Wollongong it all looks the same.

I have worked a bit in non western countries with a colleague by the name of Siobhan and the pronounciations/tongue twisting agony of that name to many is very impressive. Of course, Niamh is far worse.

What do you think liberation means?

And have you ever thought that a world which is tolerant of people of all stripes (inlcluding women) might be a better place for a misfit like yourself?

You take it too literally. “Wimmin’s libbers” have nothing to do with freedom, they obsess about “equality” like if women get paid 49% and men get paid 51% they complain, because women make up 51% and men make up 49% of the population. That’s got nothing to do with freedom, and makes a mockery out of “equality” and does their cause no good.

JB, trolls like Mr G are unworthy of your valuable time, which could be spent doing something more useful, like staring into space. Just leave this one handed typist and his porn collection to his own sticky devices (in both senses of the word).

Back on topic, you have to wonder whether some of the commercial channels give a rat’s about local news services – which they only provide because they are forced to by regulation. Thank goodness for VH and the ABC news – at least there is some commitment to quality there.

I want ?Shivorne? Heanu brought back as news presenter

It’s an Irish name and spelt Siobhan, tho I guess there are bogans out there somewhere using Shivorne because it’s uneek and unewesewal. Her last name is Heanue.

I’m sorry Mr G, I realise you live under some pretty dark rocks, but are you suggesting women should not be free?

What? Where did I say women shouldn’t be free??

Virginia Hausseger is a feminist? Well we certainly can’t be having that now can we? That would just upset The Natural order Of Things, wouldn’t it? And a journalist who writes a column in a newspaper? This is going way too far! The next thing you know, Virginia and other women will start having…oh…I dunno…ideas or opinions or something, and the whole bloody world will end up on a slippery downhill slide towards the hell of sexual equality, chaos will descend and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse will come galloping out of the doors of the ABC studio onto Northbourne Ave.

And we don’t want that.

If you read her column in The Canberra Times, you’d understand what I’m on about, her radical women’s libber ideas, put-downs of men and how they work, and so on. This has nothing to do with the mere fact she wrote a column in the paper, it is what she wrote about that’s the problem, and the problem is, her theme was all about belittling men. That’s the problem, don’t you get it???

“…..And we don’t want that.” well sir, what we don’t want is opinionated feminist claptrap!

Now…..

This is a business making millions out of Canberra and they can’t even afford to pay for a graphic artist?

Ahhhh…nope…I don’t get it. Not at all.

I’m a bloke, I’ve read a lot of Virginia’s columns in the CT and I’ve never picked up the “belittling men” vibe that you evidently have.

Maybe..uh…it’s not there.

I thought it was still broadcast from Kingston studio.

That explains Danielle Post then, I thought she was from one of the regionals somewhere previously.

What contempt WIN show for its ACT viewers.

WIN’s Canberra news is broadcast from Canberra, Post moved here from Wollongong after Jessica Good left.

Given that Canberra isn’t exactly the biggest metropolis where you can just pull newsreaders out of your ass, it is understandable that most presenters and reporters come here from around the region or other regional areas of Australia.

Given pretty much every reporter on WIN news up and left to the national news rooms within the 6 months or so, seeing newbies on the news is expected. I’m sure they will get better.

The almost freefall decline in the quality of WIN news has cemented my dial on ABC Canberra. (Secondary factor was seeing the creepy WIN sports presenters head plastered across 40-odd inches of TV screen for the first time. Stuff of nightmares.)

ABC FTW… they’ve got Virginia Hausegger AND the wonderful Mark Carmody. If they’d just prune the sports segment a bit more, it would be perfect.

But Mark Carmody is worse than Tim Bailey, an absolute irritant of a weather presenter.

Virginia is a wimmin’s libber feminist, has anyone ever seen her column in The Canberra Times?

And Mark Carmody presents the weather in an interesting manner.

Mark Carmody is great for a laugh but in a good way! Definitely more interesting then other weather reports where it is just delivered down the lens in a matter of fact way. Though I am still waiting for the night he manages to get through the entire weather without tripping over his words at some point. Might shout myself a beer when he does in celebration – come on Mark you can do it!

She did start out in the Western Plains, producing radio content for 2MCE and doing her own program via the Community Radio Network. She then ended up with Prime and finally being tossed around the WIN Network wherever a fill in was required.

You’ll rarely get people with much competence in regional news, both because it tends to have people just starting their careers and more senior people aren’t interested. Personally, I think Post and Kennedy did a fair job given extremely limited resources and she’s still doing a good effort. There’s not much other talent there anymore.

I’ll second the praise though for Virginia Hausegger. In all frankness, I sometimes ask why the hell she is in Canberra? Doing local news in a media backwater is far less than she’s done and barely uses her talents. That said, I’m not complaining. Canberra is fortunate to have her!

Have noticed the closeness, headshot only, must be a very small studio in the gong. And when the sport guy comes on, arrgghh scary, he is freaky looking.

The cosy shot of both of them sitting together towards the end would be comical if it wasn’t slightly disturbing, I swore off WIN news permanently yesterday, I am sure I am not alone.

I’ve met Ms Hausegger briefly on a couple of occasions, and been to several functions that she’s presided over. She’s a truly delightful person and a compellingly beautiful woman. When you’re with her, it’s hard to take your eyes off her both because of her physical attractiveness and her evident intelligence and strength of personality.

If I wasn’t married and she wasn’t married…

Interestingly, my wife feels the same about her. 🙂

I want ?Shivorne Heanu brought back as news presenter (yeah I know, I know, poke fun at me all you like, I am allowed to like female newsreaders and journos aren’t I?). I want ?Shivorne? kept on a permanent basis, with someone else decent doing the weather other than Mark with the flower on his suit. Virginia is a wimmin’s libber feminist, has anyone ever seen her column in The Canberra Times?

Anyway, Canberra is suffering from a local news drought, and the ABC brings hardly any local news so doesn’t make much of an alternative to WIN News I’m afraid……

You get a lot of media people here who are plainly from somewhere else. For ages, the clown on commercial radio when doing the traffic report would refer to The ParkesWay, evidently thinking it was like the parkway (and probably didn’t know that the Parkway’s real name is Tuggeranong Parkway).

As I understand it the reason for the new extreme closeup is because they’ve done away with the on-screen graphics used to introduce news items. Seems a cost-cutting exercise — and given the new cropped shots they could have potentially done away with the desk too!

Well the studio is here in Canberra, but the talent is largely trucked in, and they’re micromanaged from the ‘gong from what I’ve heard.

Have noticed the closeness, headshot only, must be a very small studio in the gong. And when the sport guy comes on, arrgghh scary, he is freaky looking.

Only watch this news if something close to home may make it, eg. Kaos saving the day or something.

On a different note – Has anyone noticed how close to the camera they sit? Do they even have a desk? When the Sport guy comes in it looks as though they are sharing a chair!

it’s the news. when do the facts matter?
