WIN News leaving Canberra?

The Canberra Times reports that Canberra’s soft focused news service will be coming to us from Wollongong:

The Canberra WIN news bulletin will be moved to the television channel’s Wollongong studios from next week, amid significant changes to the local news team.

It is understood a local half-hour bulletin would still be broadcast to the capital, but it would be presented by a Wollongong-based news reader.

It is any small wonder that Canberra is not taken seriously be the rest of the country. the seat of Government can’t even sustain a local news service. Now we have to put up with Southern Cross news from Wollongong, Win from the Gong and the ever vacuous Natalie Forrest. Its a dark day in local media. RATV??

Also, over the Xmas/New Years period there is no local bulletin, only a regional bulletin. Hopefully this will not be the case in Canberra.

Pretty sure this is already happening – there was a suspiciously large amount of news from regional NSW in last year’s Christmas-period bulletins.

WIN produces a southern NSW news bulletin each weekday in Wollongong and it goes to air late at night. There is the token Canberra story plus heaps of stories from the coast, Riverina and central west. This is the bulletin WIN shows over Christmas/New Year at 6:30 as well. How long before WIN decides that it costs too much to produce a dedicated local news bulletin for Canberra and replaces it with the southern NSW bulletin year-round?

For the last few Xmasses/New Year periods we’ve had a regional news and not our local news, plus every so often we don’t get a local bulletin at all, like this year around some anniversary like the Centenary or the firestorm Win failed to air the local bulletin entirely after saying it was going to do some kind of special on the event.

Not to mention the times our local Win news replaces part of the national news with 15 minutes or so of local news, sport and weather, because of sport or some renovation or talent crap that apparently must start at 6:30, and can’t be put back half an hour on our supposedly “local” channel.

Shame that we’re losing Win news as it was the one that showed the most local content. Looks like the RiotAct will only have the Crimes as competition in the local news field.

Is this local TV news heading the same way as local papers? I suggest Barcham start a daily video review of local excitements!

I thought it already was – the “late edition” is full of news from the Illawarra area and exciting information about how the local amateur football team is going.

This is absolutely tragic news. As a public transport advocate i have had far more coverage from WIN than the ABC. I have never once been contacted by ABC TV, whereas WIN would frequently contact ACT Light Rail for comment, usually to provide balance to some Government announcement.

The only time ABC TV contacted ACT Light Rail was for a 7.30 report piece by Ross Solly.

Perhaps more attention should have been paid to their local advertising salespeople?

Why???

Interesting, do remember people I linked to the ad Win placed for a new Canberra news Chief of Staff a while back, couldn’t they find anyone?

Win did this in rural VIC a few years ago. Locally-based reporters produce content but the bulletin comes out of a regional centre. The main problem is that the newsreaders frequently mispronounce place and street names. Also, over the Xmas/New Years period there is no local bulletin, only a regional bulletin. Hopefully this will not be the case in Canberra.
