WIN TV... loves Wollongong... not really Canberra

So tonight we hear the news that WIN TV is going to broadcast the Wollongong Dragons V Brisbane Broncos live across their network in NSW and Queensland tomorrow night (Friday 21 August). This is despite Channel Nine broadcasting the Wests Tigers V Parramatta Eels in Sydney, and the normal practice would be… what is seen in Sydney, is seen in NSW and the ACT.

On the (unfortunately rare, and unjustifiably rare) occasions when Channel Nine has decided to put the Canberra Raiders on free to air TV on a Friday night… but invariablly decided to put the Raiders on the delayed game at 9.30pm, we were told that it was IMPOSSIBLE for WIN TV to broadcast the Raiders live at 7.30pm – even if it was a game actually being played outside Canberra. Yes, WIN TV told us we must see what Sydney sees. The Raiders must be on delay, just like in Sydney.

So what gives now? Suddenly it IS possible for WIN TV to flick a switch and show the game that ISN’T on in Sydney?

Yes, we now know, WIN TV doesn’t give a damn about the Canberra audience. It is Wollongong TV, and they are not interested in serving the Canberra TV market.

Waiting that extra 2 hours on Friday night was worth it.

GO THE EELS!

Eyeball… they’ve known about the “switch” since at least the 1980s, when live broadcasts were pumped into Canberra when not shown elsewhere.

I’ve worked in broadcast television a long time, and I’d like you to tell me how you think things actually work.

Thanks.

LOL The Raiders only got that massive crowd because they were playing TOP OF THE LADDER!!

Thanks, Captain Obvious. Of course the games against the best teams are going to get the best crowds! If nothing else, all the St George fans who’ve been living under a rock for ~30 years are now out professing their support for the team, and turned up. That said, the majority of the stadium was there in support of the Raiders, who didn’t disappoint.

Genie said :

The Canberra Raiders simply do not draw enough support to have “live” games on free to air tv. Perhaps when they are good enough to stay in the top 4, and STILL don’t get free to air coverage start whining then.

LOL, I didn’t mention a thing about the lack of FTA coverage of Raiders games, just pointed out that there were just a few more than “10” people at the game against St George. But what you’re inferring demonstrates what the real problem is – the attitude amongst Canberrans that if a team isn’t winning, it isn’t worth supporting.

“And I very much doubt there are more St George supporters in Canberra than Raiders supporters. “

And, genius, I can guarantee there are more St G/Ill supporters, sponsors $ and attention attracted nation wide. Do you not understand the simplest notions of market economics? The Raiders are not a marquee team. Haven’t been for the last 10 years.

And how, exactly, are you privy to all these ‘decisions’?

10? Try 19,350 people at last Raiders home game, and an average of more than 11,000 for each of the 11 home games so far this season. No wonder you’re jealous of figures like that given that the AFL has drawn an average of less than 10,000 at each of its TWO fixtures this season.

LOL The Raiders only got that massive crowd because they were playing TOP OF THE LADDER!!

And the average has only gone up to 11k because of that game.

VG… “and radio”??!! It is 2009 and it is entirely reasonable to expect vision with the sound!

It’s all there you just have to pay for it. Am watching the Raiders play right now 🙂

Channel 9, WIN, whatever aren’t there for a community service. They’re trying to make money. They’ll put whatever show on they think will rate higher.

And when the decision was made to not broadcast the Raiders V Titans early in the year, positions on the ladder were irrelevant. And I very much doubt there are more St George supporters in Canberra than Raiders supporters. I am certainly using the brain, shame others are not. The issue is why WIN TV is not serving the Canberra market.

Eyeball In A Quart Jar Of Snot2:48 am 23 Aug 09

I can imagine the guys in their production department right now looking for this switch.

And one more little bit for you greeneyed. You might want to check out the St. George bit of St.George/Illawarra. I would suggest that a straw poll of RL supporters would find a lot more support that franchise than the Raiders.

It’s not just a ‘Wollongong’ decision

You could add in the crowd of about 10 people would probably reduce to 5 if the game was televised live too.

Then again, you’re part of the problem yourself. Easier to incessantly criticise a team in another, more successful code, than actually getting out and supporting your own code, isn’t it?

“This is 2009. I find it extraordinary that all games are not available “live”.”

Between Ch9, Fox and radio they all are.

Use your brain. It isn’t a hard choice when one leads the comp and the other can’t make the semis. Stop whingeing, its clouding your logic

Eyeball… I’m afraid you are the delusional one. WIN TV doesn’t have cameras at any NRL games, ever. Channel Nine produce the telecasts. All they do is take a feed from Channel Nine.

As shown last night, they can simply choose to take one telecast from Nine, or the other.

They actually proved last night that it is, in fact, as simple as “flicking the switch”. Maybe a little more complex, but in 2009, technically very achieveable.

My point is WIN CHOOSE to excercise the choice for Wollongong viewers last night (indeed they imposed that choice on their entire network) but have refused point blank to exercise that choice for Canberra viewers in recent years.

VG you seem to be missing the point again.

We have had two games on Nine this year… and I correct what I said before. One was a Friday night game V Titans from the Gold Coast and the other was a Sunday afternoon game V Manly.

No one gets the Sunday game live, not that I understand that either.

However, on Friday night, there are two games. One is live, one is delayed by more than two hours.

WIN TV had the perfect opportunity to beam in the Titans games live into Canberra. It is, in fact, easy to organise. It’s been done many times in the past (prior to WIN’s woeful service for the Canberra community).

But they said… no it can’t be done. Only now we know that it CAN BE DONE. They just did it for the Dragons supporters in Wollongong, and it is something they have refused to do more than once in recent years for the Raiders supporters in Canberra.

Now we know what WIN TV thinks of the people of Canberra.

Fox Sports. They broadcast live, but NOT the three Channel Nine/WIN games.

The only way to see the Nine/WIN games live is if Nine/WIN choose to show them live.

This is 2009. I find it extraordinary that all games are not available “live”.

No.

Its a shame to miss the live Tigers game, but foxtel are replaying it at 3.30am Saturday on Fox 3, so i just have to record it to watch at a decent hour on Saturday.

The name of the company is Wollongong Illawarra Network. Every TV station callsign in NSW ends with N which stands for NSW, just as every Victorian station ends with V for Victoria and so on.

The point is this: Canberra people would much prefer to watch the Canberra Raiders live on the occasions they have been selected by Nine… on the miserable two occasions they have been selected by Nine this year.

Nine decides to put the Raiders on delay. They are games against Penrith and the Gold Coast, both at the away venues for Canberra. It would be a simple flick of a switch to beam the Raiders game into Canberra live. WIN TV “declines” to do so. They tell us it is impossible. We must take what is being shown in Sydney.

Suddenly, tonight, WIN TV decides it IS possible to flick the switch, and not do they decide to supply Wollongong with the Wollongong Dragons V Brisbane Broncos, they supply the whole of country NSW and the ACT with the game!

Brisbane is always going to be on in Queensland… it happens every week. This is about what is supplied into the Canberra TV market.

I’m not arguing with the decision of WIN TV to screen the Wollongong Dragons V Brisbane tonight. What I’m suggesting is they have double standards. They tell us one thing, then do another. What I’m suggesting is they do not care about the Canberra public. They are not serving our local TV market in the way that they should.

So when I ask the question, I think I’ve thought it through. I think I’ve thought of all the points you raise. And then I think I know the point I’m making is an entirely reasonable one.

WIN TV clearly does not care about the population of Canberra.

I think you’ve become too ‘green eyed’ that you can’t adhere to reason.

If you keep telling yourself that there’s some guy who is just going to ‘flick a switch’ and that it’s all so easy then I’m afraid you’re quite delusional.

Not only would WIN have probably negotiated the switching of the games to showcase their sponsored team/stadium well in advance, but their crew/facilities are probably involved in beaming this out to TCN9 in Sydney and not the other way around.

Hey Ryan, guess how WIN TV in Wollongong would have to pick up a feed from QTQ9 in Brisbane?

It would have to go through TCN9 in Sydney.

I probably exaggerated a bit in my first post by using the word ‘impossible’, but I don’t think people realise how things actually work.

At best Canberra would add what, 20,000 total viewers?

The WIN Sports broadcasters don’t care about Canberra because they don’t have to. Canberra isn’t a marquee team.

Get Fox, you don’t miss them at all.

I reiterate what I said before

Have a quick squizz where St. George sit on the ladder

Then have a quick squizz where Canberra do

Then think about how big Brisbane are not only in Brisbane but Qld in general

Then think about how big the Raiders are outside the ACT

Then you may not have to ask the question

That’s about all that needed to be said..

Only problem I see with it being called Wollongong Illawarra Network is it would be funny when they refer on their network to the ‘WIN Network’ it would read Wollongong Illawarra Network Network..

I looked at Wikipedia too, I wonder where that one stands.

Canberra doesn’t get a mention, I was upset when Kerry-Ann was taken off in the mornings, but now she’s back, although the were airing the programme in Woollongong, that’s Canberra for you, behind the eight ball (backward)

No it wouldn’t.

The game being televised at 7.30 live into NSW on Nine is often different to the game being televised live at 7.30 into QLD on Nine.

For example – say one friday night game is Bulldogs v Sharks, the other Cowboys v Titans. Nine will play the Bulldogs/Sharks live into NSW @ 7.30 and have the Cowboys/Titans game delayed at 9.30, whilst Nine Queensland will play the Cowboys/Titans live at 7.30 with the Bulldogs/Sharks at 9.30.

WHen the Raiders and Titans played earlier this year, that game was delayed at 9.30 in NSW, but went to air live in QLD at 7.30 – all WIN had to do was pick up the feed from Nine QLD, not Nine NSW.

One of the major issues here is that Nine gets to pick the three matches it wants each week a few weeks ahead, and because they air both Friday matches, this means they pick who plays on a Friday each week. Obviously they’re going to pick the matches they feel will give them the best ratings (traditional clashes, finals rematches).

It is part of the contract that each team must have a minimum of TWO of their matches telecast by Nine each year. Each YEAR. With the Raiders not doing so well in recent years, you’ll find that this is why it is very rare to see the Raiders games on Nine, and why it is very rare for the Raiders to play on a Friday night. The only other team you’ll rarely see on Nine is the Warriors.

Terrible system, and lets hope something is done when the rights come up for renegotiation.

Actually WIN stands for Wollongong Illawarra Network – that was the registered name when they first began broadcasting. SCTen is still officially CTC – Canberra Television Corporation, and Prime is still officially CBN – Canobolas Broadcasting Company. These are the official names recognised by the ABA.

I believe they covered this on the footy show last year. The 2 Friday night games are usually picked being the 2 best clashes to see that round. (when the schedule is announced and normally involving a QLD team.) As for air times, the QLD teams game would be shown live into QLD, and the other game live in NSW.

But I’m confused.. The Eels games was advertised as being live in Canberra with the Dragons game delayed. Which game is the 730 game and which is the 930 game now ? You guys are making it sound like its the other way around now. Although I would much rather see the top of the table clash between the Dragons and Broncos live, than a middle of the ladder clash.

scoota – The games that WIN declined to cover live this year were played at Penrith and the Gold Coast. Live cover into Canberra wouldn’t have affected the gate at Canberra Stadium…

Regardless of technical issues etc, any smart person would know that the game at Wollongong is a sell out. Therefore it makes real to televise it dont you think? The game in Canberra however will be lucky to reach 4000 so why make it harder on the Raiders to fill seats by giving it free to air coverage? If all else fails get pay tv or become real paying members of your chosen club.

What did’nt think of that?

Go the Raiders..

WIN Executives are also going to push for a live prime-time broadcast of a game that’s played at ‘WIN Stadium’.

Maybe a re-branding of Canberra stadium is in order?

Eyeball – Are you seriously saying that broadcasting the Raiders live into Canberra would be difficult to do technically, in the year 2009? Capital TV, when they had the rights, did it often in the late 1980s!

It’s not impossible, but there’s so many factors at play here.

Also, Capital TV/Southern Cross Ten broadcasts from Canberra. WIN TV doesn’t.

MrMagoo – The games WIN has declined to broadcast live into Canberra were games played in Sydney or Queensland. The impact on gate takings at Canberra Stadium was not an issue.

Eyeball – Are you seriously saying that broadcasting the Raiders live into Canberra would be difficult to do technically, in the year 2009? Capital TV, when they had the rights, did it often in the late 1980s!

When 2 games clash on Fox you can press the red button and watch which ever one you want. I wonder when or if this will be happening with Channel 9/WIN?

Mick, I FEEL YOUR PAIN

But you can watch it at http://www.justin.tv/namikstudio depending on which game they play first.

Poor second cousin to the TV, but….

Maybe it’s because the game’s at WIN Stadium, they want to get the most live coverage and bang for their buck.

I reckon if more people went to Raiders games and they actually reached their goal of 5000 members – they’d get better tv coverage.

I am so pissed off right now.

I am a massive Eels fan and wanted to go up to the game in Sydney, but I have my three kids with me and it’s too hard to get up there this arvo.

So, not only can’t I see the game live at the ground, I can’t even watch it live at home with my kids.

What a load…

Go the Saints!

It WOULD be impossible for WIN TV to simply ‘flick a switch’ in regards to the Raiders game as they would not have any control over what they were receiving from TCN9 in Sydney.

The obvious difference here is that the Dragons game is being played in Wollongong, and WIN’s facilities up there are probably being utilised in broadcasting the game and sending out to TCN9.

The same couldn’t really apply here in Canberra because the station here is just a small shack that broadcasts nothing but the news.

The Dragons are a top 4 team and bring ratings, Canberra isn’t and wont. It has nothing to do with parochialism or schoolyard style liking of one city over the other…
When we get good, they’ll show Raiders games in prime time.

Hells_Bells749:52 am 21 Aug 09

Yep.. WIN.. Wollongong Illawarra Nowra! How about ACT TV or CYG TV (Canberra Yass Goulburn)? Or something else that means something to us.

Because in all my time being a Canberran I have had stuff all to ever do with any of those first three places.

It’s dumb!

And their local news, I can’t watch it anymore! Let alone the way they butcher sport for people.

WIN TV is Wollongong based so it’s no real surprise. disappointing though as an Eels fan I was really looking forward to tonights game and a couple of refreshments.

Regarding the Raiders, you may find that Raiders CEO Don Furner has asked not to be the live game as it affects crowd numbers given the freshness of the air at Canberra Stadium of a night. The option to watch it live and not get cold proves too tempting to some fans.
