Windy and dusty

By johnboy - 15 April 2009 32

The ACT Emergency Services Agency has posted the following note:

    Strong winds and dust

The ACT State Emergency Service (ACT SES) and the ACT Fire Brigade are responding to calls for assistance as a result of the current strong winds and dust storm.

The call outs are for fallen trees in various suburbs across the city including Yarralumla, Garren, Florey, Chifley and Lyons.

Residents requiring assistance should ring the ACT SES on 132 500.

The ACT Ambulance Service also urges people with breathing difficulties to remain indoors for the afternoon and call 000 if an ambulance is required.

UPDATED: Not sure if it’s related but RiotACT’s internet connection appears to be suffering in the wild weather too. Apologies for any inconvenience.

A serious question here though, there’s a medium sized tree down near my place in Bonython, on Govt Land and hasn’t damaged anything at all, am I supposed to report it at all?

Or should I just leaf it alone….heh, sorry couldn’t resist thought it wood be a good one!

I sure you could ‘rrot’out some assistance. After all the Gov’t has ‘Branches’ of its shopfront all over town. I hope you didn’t love the tree to much, as you might ‘pine’ for it.

I was walking through Kingston at lunchtime and a small stick blew down from a tree and nearly hit me. I figured I would:
a) Call 000
b) Write to the government demanding help and/or compensation and
c) Bitch about it on the internet.

But what if the stick blew off a passing government truck whose load was uncovered, struck you in your remaining good eye and blinded you. You might do all three.

I guess I should have cut back on those baked beans this morning.

I never voted for trees. Why should my tax dollars go to them?

This is a tradgedy waiting to happen.
I think it’s time to chop down all trees to prevent a child being hit by one of these deadly missiles.

yeah i got hit by a leaf, its time for the trees to go ! 😉

My connection in swinging in and out too. I thought there would be a discussion about the dust but it took me a half hour to get here. Here’s hoping it doesn’t rain or everything will be filthy again. I live on the slopes of Mt. Taylor and I can’t see past the next hill into Tuggers.

VY- good thing you didn’t merge points a) and c) otherwise you’d have to add: d)read bigfeet’s response concerning lack of police integrity.

They shut down the road near the new Health building in Woden for a little while as they were trying to secure the stuff on the roof. Apparently wind speeds were over 120KM/H up there.

I was out Fairbairn way today and it was interesting watching the aicraft try to land with those insane crosswinds. One of the Tiger aircraft had a bit of a hairy landing.

Damn near blew me upright on my way into work. Which wouldn’t have been too bad, had I not been taking a roundabout, at speed, on my motorbike!

I ‘aint looking forward to the journey home neither
