Windy and dusty

By johnboy 15 April 2009 32

The ACT Emergency Services Agency has posted the following note:

    Strong winds and dust

The ACT State Emergency Service (ACT SES) and the ACT Fire Brigade are responding to calls for assistance as a result of the current strong winds and dust storm.

The call outs are for fallen trees in various suburbs across the city including Yarralumla, Garren, Florey, Chifley and Lyons.

Residents requiring assistance should ring the ACT SES on 132 500.

The ACT Ambulance Service also urges people with breathing difficulties to remain indoors for the afternoon and call 000 if an ambulance is required.

UPDATED: Not sure if it’s related but RiotACT’s internet connection appears to be suffering in the wild weather too. Apologies for any inconvenience.

well, in phillip, the power went out for about a minute. was pretty handy… not. very hard to explain something to a client when the phone is working, but the screen is black… Though they were patient, and let me phone them back when power was restored…

Windy.. Was it ever!

Three of my kids went to walk a friend home yesterday in Evatt. As they left our street and onto an alleyway close to home, just metres before them a whopping tree crashed down in front of them. I never did go have that ‘promised’ look (was my bday yesterday, slipped my mind lol) and when my boyfriend arrived home from the shop run this morning, he made comment on “You oughta see this tree that’s fallen in the alleyway, it’s f**king huge”

Poor kids! Or should I say Damn lucky kids!

Our work internet died for a while this afternoon apparently related to the storm. We’re with Grapevine somehow, if that’s any use in saying why it failed.

for some reason grapevine is particuarly vulnerable in anything but calm weather – whenever there is a major storm with lightning I can guarantee that I lose my connection for a few hours. delicate little souls!

I was driving around and wondered what it was, as I couldn’t smell smoke, gum trees belong in the bush, oops this is the bush capital

Sounds like you deserve an extra scoop of ice cream tonight Danman.

Cheers Sepi – Favourited – Looks like I was coming home on the 39 to 63km WNW winds, which is on my nose the whole way home…Of course that is (I assume) at the airport – but still gives a general snapshot of Gunghalin. Probably dispatched a few extra calories too 🙂

Every day I get Sou’easters on the way to work and nor westers on the way home….. Good fun if I lived southside

You can come back in now. Apparantly it’s a bit windy and dusty out there.

Not wrong, I went to work in a crisp gleaming white shirt and came home looking like I’d been working in a sewer.

C’mon bigfeet, keep up. You should know I meant to have written ‘bigred’ not ‘bigfeet’. Do I have to clarify and correct everything I write?! Sheesh…

Sorry, my mistake. You are right, I should have known that. You can come back in now. Apparantly it’s a bit windy and dusty out there.

VY- good thing you didn’t merge points a) and c) otherwise you’d have to add: d)read bigfeet’s response concerning lack of police integrity.

I watched a group of happy magpies playing with/in the wind this arvo. It was as if they were competing with each other. One would fly up very high and then get whooshed around and float down on the wind. Then another would do the same.

It was as if they were at a magpie version of a drug addled rave.

I was walking through Kingston at lunchtime and a small stick blew down from a tree and nearly hit me. I figured I would:
a) Call 000
b) Write to the government demanding help and/or compensation and
c) Bitch about it on the internet.

This is a tradgedy waiting to happen.
I think it’s time to chop down all trees to prevent a child being hit by one of these deadly missiles.

There is already a charity to rid the world of flying debris. Maybe we should hop on board.

Bloody hell, took me 30 minutes on my 16km commute to get home – mostly westerly with s/westerly gusts – anyone any idea of the windspeed – I had real trouble getting the pushie over 15km/h – was almost like riding home with the brakes half on… and a puncture to boot 🙂

Deckard 5:48 pm 15 Apr 09

Although the tree might have been rrot which is why it fell over.

BerraBoy68 5:29 pm 15 Apr 09

“root” no rrot. Damned windy weather fingers…

A serious question here though, there’s a medium sized tree down near my place in Bonython, on Govt Land and hasn’t damaged anything at all, am I supposed to report it at all?

Or should I just leaf it alone….heh, sorry couldn’t resist thought it wood be a good one!

I sure you could ‘rrot’out some assistance. After all the Gov’t has ‘Branches’ of its shopfront all over town. I hope you didn’t love the tree to much, as you might ‘pine’ for it.
