It had to be said.*

Canberra’s coldest gaming convention is coming up this weekend, so dust off your Space Orks and grab your Nerf Gun, this weekend is Wintercon.

Wintercon 2013 will be held on Saturday the 13th and Sunday the 14th of July 2013.

Venue: Fitzroy Pavilion, EPIC. Near the McDonalds.

The venue will open from 8:30am each day, and close at Midnight on Saturday and 6:00pm on Sunday.

* Sometimes a reference is way too obvious and while you feel it shouldn’t be made, it is actually so easy to make that it would take more effort not to do so.

Well, this turned out to be a great way to spend a couple of hours. It was very well organised, and everybody was having a really good time (ok, so I saw one guy with his head in his hands, but he’d just lost a Rhino.) Thanks to the Nerf guys and the Hundred Swords folks for entertaining my kids – they had a blast.

… people say ‘who has wood for my sheep’?

It’s funny ’cause it’s true…

Heading along to oh and ahh over people’s shoulders is free, the $10 is for use of the games Library.

To hell with the games! There’s going to be a fully Nerf sponsored firing range and Nerf blaster giveaways! AND The Hundred Swords will be there doing battle demos.

are you for real?? Nerf stuff going to be there?

Does the $10 library entry fee let you walk around and ooh and ah and shoulder surf at the war gaming tables?

Spectators are free, you only have to pay if you want to play.

List of traders from the website:

Bitzgalaxy
Burfitt Tools
Combat Company
Games Capital
Olympian Games
Tribe of the little people
Dark Heart
Hall of Heroes

Does the $10 library entry fee let you walk around and ooh and ah and shoulder surf at the war gaming tables? Or are you stuck in a smaller, separate area watching people say ‘who has wood for my sheep’?

Just so people know, it’s not all bearded men playing with dollsminiatures.

In addition to the competition events, there will be a large library of modern boardgames suitable for everyone from families with young children (Ticket to Ride etc.) to Cold War history enthusiasts with 3 hours to spare (Twilight Struggle). It’s $10 per person entry to the library area, children under 12 free. Friendly volunteers will be available to recommend games and teach how to play.

Ticket to Ride is lame.

Will there be retailers if so who?
