Lets be honest, it’s not the sports, movies, tv shows, or video games are to blame. It is the idiots/thuigs which commit violent crimes.

…many of whom do so on a weekly basis on a fully televised basis with nary a whiff of police interest in prosecuting them for their acts of violence.

Here is a typical newspaper report about it:
http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/state-of-origins-monumental-cost-to-nrl-clubs-through-injury-and-suspension/story-fni3fbgz-1226991522911

Notice this “sport” needs the following words to describe it:
“new level of ferocity”
“fight for semi-final positions ”
“were cut down by injuries ”
“injury mayhem”
“Greg Alexander described this year’s series as “brutal”.”

Are you referring to the general playing of the sport, or the “fights” that sometimes break out during them in which barely a blow is ever landed. I’m not a league man myself, but if you are citing the injuries incurred through a contact sport as “acts of violence” then I have to disagree with you. It is a sport. Injuries occur during sport. A large number of them through no violence at all, such as hamstring/calf/quad tears or the simple rolling of an ankle or hyper extension of a knee while moving at full speed and turning sharply. Then you have impact injuries, many of which are inevitable when bodies are clashing. But to suggest that these clashes are criminal acts of violence is ridiculous. You CAN NOT compare them to normal life as there is a mutual understanding that this contact will occur during play, as opposed to someone tackling someone else on the street during a fight.

I can only assume that you are referring to the “fights” on field, almost all of wish are just a little bit of push and shove. When was the last time we saw someone in the major football codes load up a punch and connect with any great force? I’d say it was Barry Hall on Brent Staker in the AFL (my preferred sport). These COULD possibly be considered criminal acts of violence, but there are mechanisms within the sport to punish these actions. There IS also the option to go down the path of criminal proceedings, should the victim be aggrieved enough and consider the act against them to be serious enough to warrant it. It hasn’t happened often, but players have been charged with assault on occassion for cheap, nasty and utterly despicable acts.

Until they arrest all the thugs who spend their Saturdays engaged in highly-paid televised violence, then arresting those who try to emulate them on a Saturday night is a waste of time.

Which sports are you referring to here? If you are going to go down the path of blaming those who portay “violence” for peoples entertainment as the cause of other people committing violent during their lives, then surely we should also be arresting, or at least banning, any portayal of violence on television, film or video games? According to your logic, these stars/role models/actors are committing acts which cause others to wish to emulate them…

Lets be honest, it’s not the sports, movies, tv shows, or video games are to blame. It is the idiots/thuigs which commit violent crimes. Crimes which were committed long before any of these mediums ever existed. There is a violent underside to human nature, which is not to excuse violent behaviour, which should rightly be shunned and punished, but which explains better the occurence of violent acts than does the watching of a sport.

Until they arrest all the thugs who spend their Saturdays engaged in highly-paid televised violence, then arresting those who try to emulate them on a Saturday night is a waste of time.

UPDATE – Two men will face the ACT Magistrates Court this week charged with assaulting a man near Bailey’s Corner last Friday morning (August 8).
