In a beautiful example of the use of ambit claims the ABC reports that Hindmarsh’s proposed mega apartments on Callam Street in Woden are coming down from 35 storeys to a mere 12-18 storeys following consultation with the Woden Community Council.

Nicely done.

Callam St JB, Callam St….

there is no agreement or plan to reduce the height from 35 storeys for that one tower.

Is this the development that will shade out Phillip Pool?

Not much chance of this happening considering the Woden Green site is a LONG way from the pool and to the SE of it!

Phillip Pool is a ripoff anyway: Adult $6, Conc $6, school age child $5, child under 4 $4.50
In comparison Manuka/Dickson: Adult $5, Conc $4, children 3+ $4, child under 3 FREE
Tuggers: Adult $6, Conc $3.70, children 4+ $4, child under 4 FREE
CISAC: Adult $5, Conc $4, children (not sure of age) $3.80, little ones FREE
Phillip is also just about the only pool that doesn’t have family prices.

It is perfectly possible that people from woden don’t often go to Civic West – if they dont’ work or study there, then why would they?

Is this the development that will shade out Phillip Pool? that is a real concern I think. Phillip Pool is already a bit pov compared to the green grass and big trees of Dickson, the mountain views of Tuggers pool and the nice kiddy pool at Cisac.

Woden is perfect for his type of stuff and it would be a shame if it didn’t get up. At least if the 35 Storey building was built it might distract the eye from Sky Plaza.

It is pretty hard to take comments from Woden CC very seriously when only one person is quoted. It is quite fragmented and struggles between those who are anti-height as against those who see a great opportunity in getting more people to live around the Town Centre in tall buildings. Overall though, they are one of the more progressive resident groups around when it comes to recognizing the strengths of Woden in offering a central location for folk looking to buy more affordable property with a heap fo infrastructure in place at the doorstep.

I agree with the comments on City West being equivalent to this. it is just a shame that Sky Plaza might have turned some people against high rise in Woden. The Hindmarsh/LDA buildings look like they would be better, but they always do on renders.

On City West, am I the only one who thinks the Apartments at New Acton look like the base of a much taller building that they are going to come back and finish. It looks like there should be a 20 storey slender building sitting atop it as you would see in Melbourne.

aaaah yes the genteel art of negotiation.

when I was a wee lad I was always amazed at the unionist’s demands as reported on the news, and had a low opinion of them as a result. eventually the reality of the stupid process called negotiation dawned on me, but it took a long time.

starting with an outlandish request for 35 stories? likely to be looking to end up with 20, will accept 15 is my take on this proposal.

“What we worry about is the integration of the planning that should surround this kind of development because really it takes Canberra’s growth into another dimension – we simply haven’t seen a development of this scale or size or height or density before”

How does that make sense? When did these folks tumble over to west civic last??

What are(if any) the real issues surrounding scale of development – it should come as a plus to have more dwellings surrounding the Woden town centre by placing no real pressure to have to over develop smaller plots in the surrounding ‘burbs.

Surely the more housing/apartments etc that are built the less pressure on home prices in the ACT. Theres a bus interchange and plenty of roads to the area so i find the whole infrastructure thing just an empty argument. I know many places trying to find people for jobs too, as there is a shortage of people out there applying for jobs across a broad spectrum of skills. Its just too expensive to live here right now and part of the problem is an undersupply of housing.

There are tallish buildings nearby as well, so its not like its in the middle of the subrubs.

Erg0 is right Jb, you kind of missed the point of the article and chose your own interpretation.

However I find it strange that the ‘Woden Community Council’ expect to be taken seriously when they have a warped and shortsighted take on the situation.
They’re worried about the infrastructure demand, but haven’t considered that immediate demand growth on infrastructure in the geographic centre of town might be met by logically longer-term increase in supply?

Actually, I think the article’s saying that three planned 12-18 storey buildings may be downsized if they can get some more land from the gubbmint to make up the difference. No mention of changes to the 35 storey building.
