Woden cinemas evacuated for "poisonous gas"

At around 7:40pm Tuesday 29 December, the Woden Hoyts cinema was curiously evacuated for a fire alarm being activated, the cause of which staff could not confirm. The initial story from one usher upon the first confirmation of the alarm source was of “smoke coming in the vents from outside the cinema.”

A few minutes later, another usher explained it was a “poisonous gas” in the smoke that set off the alarm, but that nothing could be confirmed until a fire team arrived.

Perhaps more curious was that there appeared to be no other part of the centre being evacuated. In fact, the two cafes on either side of the cinemas were still open for business, with one still thriving with customers as cinema patrons were being marshalled across the street to the car park.

After patrons were told that a full refund would involve a wait until after the fire team concluded their investigation, chaos ensued in the car park as – even in the event of an apparent emergency – there were cars being held up at the exit gates for faulty or unpaid tickets.

Last Sunday night the fire alarm went off at the Southern Cross Club, the firies rushed from across the road and the patrons just sat there. Not one person that I could see made an effort to gather their children and belongings and head for the exists. It was nothing serious but I just wonder what would have happened if the fire was real. Running of the bulls comes to mind.

Was it a fire alarm, or an evacuation alarm? You do know theres a difference, right?

Forgot to add, 10 minutes into a movie, isn’t that only halfway through the 20 minutes of ads and previews they show beforehand then? Normally 10 minutes in means a movie hasn’t actually started screening yet. Did you check this katahandmade, or you just preferred to have something to get pissed off about so you didn’t even go in and find out?

Blaming the hoyts staff? Thats like blaming the staff at a macdonalds restaurant. They hire 16 yr olds for a reason, cheap ignorant labour. Try blaming the Hoyts management maybe, the people responsible for telling those 16 yr olds to keep selling tickets and not say anything, or more likely they didn’t actually know what was going on so kept selling tickets as they hadn’t been instructed otherwise. Either way its the management calling the shots, not the kid behind the ticket window, try again katahandmade.

I was there, and had just come from eating Indian food for dinner.

Reminds me of the cocktail called the Concorde. A couple of guys were downing a few in Cube, enjoying the glow of the rocket fuel coursing through their veins. Next morning one rings the other.

Guy1 (groggily): Hello?
Guy2: You remember those Concorde drinks we had last night?
Guy1: Oh boy! Yeah!
Guy2: Whatever you do, don’t fart.
Guy1. Why not?
Guy2: I’m calling from Singapore.

The issue with Woden Plaza is there is different fire systems in place for the centre, hoytss and again dick smith and babar. This would have to be due to hoyts being added on after the cantre was built and then again for dick smith and babar.

Reported as a small fire in Westfield centre management offices in the Canberra Times today.

oh… and to top all that off they locked the front doors at 10pm, so others who came back for the “10pm” movie couldnt even get back in!

Also another couple of notes to Hoyts staff:
1. fix the PA system – was told last night its not working (its very handy during emergencies like fire evacs and to let people know of delays without having to shout at everyone)
2. Was also told that you all knew the movie was going to be delayed when you sold the tickets to everyone and did not advise us at the time (which had we known we could have had the choice not to bother and go home/elsewhere instead).

Pretty slack! Ahh feel better now getting all that off my chest!

Hoyts was a joke last night. My friends and I arrived at 8:40pm for the 9:15 session of Avatar, only to be told 20 minutes after I had purchased my ticket that the movie would not start until 10pm due to the fire evacuation. Ok that was fair enough and was not a problem. So with a one hour wait, we decided to go have a drink elsewhere (as the cinema was packed and there is a huge lack of seating) and come back at the new running time.

Arrived back at 9:50 only to discover the movie had already been running for 10 minutes before we arrived!! Was not happy! No point watching a movie when you have missed the start… many unhappy people last night.

So to all the Hoyts staff that were working last night, please learn how to handle these situations better. If you tell people a new running time then stick to it!

I wouldn’t take the the infomation of an usher as gospel. And if it really was an emergency, I don’t think the fire brigade would have allowed you to exit your car from the near by, multi-story carpark. They would have moved you away via foot. Sounds like a bunch of nothing.
