ACT Policing is investigating a number of small fires believed to be deliberately lit in the Woden area this week (week beginning Monday, October 19).
Around 5.00pm on Monday afternoon, police attended the grass area behind Jessop Place in Phillip in response to a fire at that location. The fire had been extinguished by ACT Fire Brigade (ACTFB) prior to police arrival and had burnt an area of grass approximately 100 square metres.
Around 2.50pm on Tuesday, it was reported that grass had been set alight along side Mawson Drive, adjacent to the Mawson Shopping Centre. Four males were seen running from the area around the time of the fire. The males are described as wearing white shirts and grey pants.
Police also attended the walkway between Marist College and Melrose High School on Tuesday afternoon around 5.15pm in relation to a number of spot fires. ACTFB had extinguished around 70 spot fires at that location.
On Wednesday afternoon around 1.20pm, two males were seen setting fire to paper in Timbarra Street, O’Malley. The fire was extinguished after the two men were confronted by a local resident. The males left the area in a small blue sedan.
In each case, all the fires were extinguished with no damage recorded. Police believe that all of the fires were deliberately lit and are appealing for public assistance to help identify the offenders.
Anyone with information which may assist police with their inquiries is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the Crime Stoppers website at www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.
