Woden from the air while under construction

Thanks to google, I stumbled across this aerial shot of Canberra. The image was part of an article written by a German architect, with an interesting outside view of Canberra’s development.

Looking west from somewhere over Red Hill, I guess the shot was taken in the mid to late 70s. Woden is still half a paddock, and the Phillip industrial area is mostly empty. The outskirts of Weston Creek appear to be under development, as is Kambah. Tuggeranong parkway and the west side of Hindmarsh drive look to be under development too. Some historical construction details and some shots of the parkway are here.

They certainly planned for lots of parking in those days…

Can’t really eyeball that one, it’s all at-grade parking then and now there are two multi-story car parks. There probably are fewer spaces per employee/shopper now but imagine how big the car parks would be if they just scaled up what they had; you’d probably need some sort of bus service to carry you in from the outer spots (sort of like Walley World).

I read somewhere that they didnt choose a rail system because the costs were 20% more than buses!

I’ve pinpointed that this pic was taken between 1974 and 1977. You can see Woden Plaza with just stage two completed (which opened in May 1974) and before stage three opened in September 1977.

This last image in linked to in the article: http://www.images.act.gov.au/duslibrary/imagesact.nsf/V01/2515BE74C8084A084A256D640023A87C?OpenDocument makes me sad.

The parkway back when it was lined with pine trees, was always such a beautiful drive into the city. And now it’s just this arid, boring highway. Even when the arboretum is developed and grown, it’s still going to be a fair way back from the road and not the whole way along that stretch between Cotter Rd and Glenloch.

Very early 1970s, maybe even late 1960s. Construction of Yarra Glen doesn’t look to be started, which suggests that it was taken quite some time before the killer flood of January 1971.

Yarra glen is there.

It used to be a T-Section so this could easilly be after the 7 Deaths.

Lovett/MLC tower is only half done at the time of the floods in 1971. So this would be 1972 or very late 1971

Above is the future aparently!
Lovett tower soon to be the 2nd tallest building in canberra?

I moved to Canberra as a kid in 1976 and we lived in Holder for 18 months. By that time Woden and Weston were pretty well developed. I reckon (wild assed guess, admittedly) that this is more like pretty early 70’s.

Not sure about kambah. That was one of the earlier ones and is to the left of the photo. (only a tiny part is showing).

Kambah is 1971 and Duffy in the far right background was 1974.

Thanks for the reference to that article: it was very interesting. I don’t know that I agree with the author that the reason we (nearly) all voted against self-government was that we didn’t want to pay our way. I think it was because the status quo _worked_.

Yuck there’s no trees and the houses are all cheek by jowl. Slum of the future.
