Bill Stefaniak has put out a hysterical media release headlined IS STANHOPE GOVT POISED TO DESTROY SPORT AND RECREATION IN THE ACT?.

Cripes! Strong stuff eh?

It turns out that the sport and recreation portfolio is what Bill’s concerned about.

“Organisations like the Australian Sports Commission, ACTSPORT and ACTAS will not have the time or the resources to negotiate with four or five separate departments.

Well boo hoo for them, and Good I say. Sports bodies should get off the public teat and provide services members choose to pay for rather than relying on collectivist funding stitch ups.

(Having said that I’m all in favour of spending more money on public sporting amenities, open to everyone not just people who’ve joined a club.)

Hysterical indeed.

Sport and Recreation moved from Education to CMD under the Liberals. It was linked to BusinessACT, and moved to Economic Development along with it.

ACTAS is an ACT Government agency reporting to the Minister for Sport.

The review hasn’t made any of its deliberations public. I’m not entirely convinced sports clubs are privy to its inner workings (assuming these “concerned parties” aren’t, heaven forbid, figments of Bill’s imagination).
