Won't anyone think of the Press Gallery journos?

In the Canberra Times today Chris Johnson is fretting that a planned June visit to Canberra by Barack Obama might disrupt the Press Gallery’s Mid Winter Ball.

United States President Barack Obama is still set to visit Canberra in mid June but his trip could upset the capital’s social event of the year by conflicting with the parliamentary press gallery Mid Winter Ball.

Politicians and journalists flock to the gala dinner dance each year to raise money for charity and generally celebrate the halfway point on the political calendar.

This year’s ball is to be held on June 16, but the window that has opened up for the President and his family to visit Australia is between June 12 and 20.

Chris seems to have confused his own workplace with the whole of the rest of the city.

Nice little tanty there.

hahahahaaa… hilarious! As someone working in the press gallery I say, invite Barack and Michelle to the ball! (and yes, I am very excited for the ball, but it only goes for a few hours! And at night. We have all the daylight hours to fuss over the Obamas). The biggest drama I can see here is that K-Rudd has to skip the ball to hang with Barack. I promise, we won’t mind at all 😉

Far out. I know that the first rule of newspaper writing is to look for the conflict in the story, but surely they don’t need to create conflict where it doesn’t exist?

One would think the ball will do well, because every politician or journalist will make sure they’re in Canberra that week even if they weren’t required for sitting weeks, and any of them not attending an Obama event (and they can’t all be attending Obama events every night he’s here) can attend the charity ball.

Well then they can move the date of the ball! Simple

And this personal whine was front page news too!

Does that mean we need to pay for a pumpkin, a rat, mice and a few lizards (presumably not the endangered varieties) so that Obama can go to the Ball?
