Woodstock rises from the dead?

Saw this sign outside Akuna Club today (which is on Akuna St in Civic amazingly).

It is a brand spanking new sign so WTF with the misspelling of ‘They’re’ in the ‘They’re Back’ and the overzealous use of apostrophes (yes I am pedantic about such things – and I know I’m not the only one who finds incorrect spelling and use of grammar annoying!) – but thought people might like to know that their beloved Woodstock is baaaaaaack.

I would rather they spell poorly and cook brilliantly than the other way around. Worth a try I say.

so i went today and had a $9.95 vego pizza. thin base (which is the best in my book), good amount of toppings, delicious! and you get a free small bowl of self-serve salad (choice of 7-8 salads/ingredients) with it. service was quick, and the food is value for money plus fonz is smiley and friendly as always.

i say go and check it out!!!

i was actually planning to go today would you believe! but i forgot (too many pints at transit)! i will go tomorrow and get back to you 🙂

I’m still waiting patiently for a revue of the new Woodstock/Akuna combination. I know the spelling is awful but hopefully the food has improved. Drop in their for a pizza some day Tori and let us know what they’re pizza is like 🙂

update:

on my way to transit yesterday i noticed that akuna club/woodstock have ‘fixed’ this sign. and when i say ‘fixed’ i mean they have stuck a sticker over ‘their’ with the correct word ‘they’re’ on it. all the other errors in the sign remain. and the OTHER incorrect sign (with ‘the’re back’ on it) is still out there.

I will never again bring spelling errors to the attention of an eatery.

I’ve been saying elsewhere you need to challenge your assumptions about everything and continually ask the question, ‘What if what I believe is wrong?’

I found this out in spades last weekend.

For all the details, stop into the quite brilliant Brill’ café in Milton, north of Ulladulla and the proprietor (whose name now escapes me) will apprise you of all. His name (and whether I’ve already mentioned this elsewhere) have been drunk or sung or danced out of my conscious grey matter.

haha toriness – she joins the riot! Shall they red pen the sign on Tuesday…? Surely the work of fonz himself.

Bad grammar makes me (sic).

The view is mine that bad grammar is something that is up with which I will not put.

“What is this…comedy Friday?! haha, so many posts and so much amusement. How am I supposed to work in these conditions! :)”

Between RA and streaming Kate Lundy’s – sorry – Sarah Palin’s soccer mom debate performance…

Indeed… do tell.

n’t think so, but as Danman pointed out, there are a lot of foul tempered, alcoholic grill cooks out there…

Grill cooks who get even more angry if you refuse to call them “chef”. It never got boring back in my Hospi days 🙂

or chefs that got called cooks?

always good for a laugh at the expense of the new kitchen hand…

screaming YES, CHEF at a grill cook in a busy cafe always has the desired response, usually the owner will wade in and tell the grill cook to knock it off.

getting someone else to scream it, priceless.

I can just imagine a sarcastic review sufacing at some stage:

Anyone that careless with a sign wont be touching my food.

“Roy the foul-tempered alcoholic grill cook”

Is that the same guy who worked at the Benjamin Club?

Overheard,
Never attribute to conspiracy what can be explained as stupidity

Stop me if someone else covered this ground, but I’ll bet you quids it’s all very deliberate to get people’s attention. (It made my head explode and snap offat the neck on first glance.) Scenario: you (I mean I) walk in to politely point out the error in their ways, catch one sniff of capricosa (sp?) and 90 minutes and $45 later I’m happy, they’re happy and I’ve taken part in an amazing viral campaign.

I’m always reminded of a car I used to see cruising around Belconnen. The (clearly classy, well educated) gentleman driving it had gone to the trouble of getting some lettering professionally added to the back windscreen.

“No fat chick’s”.

I’ve never quite gotten over it – “Moron” would have saved him some money and carried the same message.

As for the sign in question, I’m always reluctant to enter such establishments. If they can’t manage basic English, I’m always afraid of how they might have coped with basic food safety and preparation.

goose LOL 🙂

Sorry folks. My posting above is for the item above this one (re trip to Korea). Too early to be using a keyboard. Apologies for any confusion.

This is significant. It boils down to this. He went on the trip – a “freebie” as he put it. That showed a lack of judgement attending a cult like this one. What did he expect? Was he so desperate to have an overseas junket? And now he wants to run a line that he has the skills, judgement and capacity to be leader. No..I don’t think so! We are entitled to ask is he that easily bought.

Sometimes I think people are a little too pedantic about communication…

This is *NOT* one of those times…

I’m with poptop on this – I’m buying a big red Artline marker tomorrow…

I’ve been wondering where I could get a bloody steak still cooking on a dangerously hot metal plate. Thanks for the info.

Grammer Panda says NO!

I sooo hope the emo waiters aren’t serving there anymore – they were crap with service.

I used to like the food and the price at the Akuna – it was the best and cheapest place to get lunch… 🙁

Be a grammar/punctuation stickler and carry a HUGE Texta

Oh dear Roland! Got to be careful when you’re picking on someone else’s grammar haven’t you. Did you mean to say “I think there’re only two uses”?

“I hope the new people can cook – spelling and grammar certainly aren’t their strong point.”

Nope – crap greasy pizza.

“And it’s not as if the rules of the apostrophe are complicated or inconsistent. I think there’s only two uses.”

It’s univer’sally known among’st the writer-type’s that an apo’strophe actually mean’s “look out, there’s an S coming”.

Take my word for it 😉

Mr_Shab
Your description of him fills me with the desire to shout “Let that man make my dinner”

Danman – Roy is far more foul-tempered and alcoholic than your average grill cook. I’ve worked with the guy and he is one of a kind. He’s a hangover made flesh; a booze and ciggy-reeking mass of profanity, He may actually have died a number of years ago, but refuses to lie down. He sure can cook a steak, though.

Clearly reminds me of the misprint in the Yellow Pages in about 2001. It listed one of Murray’s Buses services as “School Executions”.

Now that is what I call a faux pas which should have been detected at multiple points.

I remember that one. Classic stuff.

Maybe not as over-zealous with the apostrophes as they should be. Unless I can’t see it because of the image resolution, shouldn’t there be an apostrophe in “Canberra’s favourite” 😉

Die Lefty Scum I didn’t think you could top your awesome name but that was pretty close.

It’s that basic lack of attention to detail wot caused their demise in the first place!

I daresay the signwriter knew of the mistakes, but conveyed their orders faithfully to ensure possible return custom for the designers mistakes.

Roy the foul-tempered alcoholic grill cook

Sounds like a typical chef/cook to me 🙂

Canberra’s street signs are just as bad

tylersmayhem2:51 pm 02 Oct 08

Let’s hope that neither the Woodstockers or the sign writers go and get any tattoo’s done that involve text eh?!

A few years ago, I was in Goulburn, and saw a panelvan with a professional paint job that must have set him back thousands. But the entire left side was emblazoned with “Artic Fox”.
If you’re gunna pay for it, you should expect it to be spelt right.

*sigh* I don’t want to have to deal with such things today.

It’s not even like the sign is PRETTY and so can get away with having a few little errors…

The proofreader in me is already refusing its patronage.

And it’s not as if the rules of the apostrophe are complicated or inconsistent. I think there’s only two uses.

firstly to signal a missing letter, for a shortened word etc.

Secondly as a possessive signifier… bearing in mind possessive pronouns (such as its, theirs and hers) don’t need the signifier.

OK, that’s the only slightly complicated bit. When it’s its or when there’s a theirs.

Because the customer is always right, and because signwriters love a good joke as much as anyone else.

pizza’s and sizzling steak’s what are here? and what is on their back? why should i look there? and how many cities are there [their? they’re? damn…]

are signwriters only recruited from extension english classes in 3rd grade, or something? what about the owners who should have a sign off [pun unintended] on the thing?

maybe an election promise from someone will be that riot act is to authroise the grammar of all public signage..?

They were gone? :O

I love how they’ve got apostrophes everywhere except for the one place it was appropriate.

Why the heck aren’t sign writers expert apostrophe users?

And on second look, that’s not an A frame. Sign then.

Christ they’ve made a meal of that A frame… I hope the new people can cook – spelling and grammar certainly aren’t their strong point.

I don’t really mind bad spelling, if it’s in a casual post on the internet here and there. But if it’s on a sign that is supposed to attract people to your place and is designed to grab as much attention as it can..

Then yeah.. a quick double take might be in order.

I had heard that the sons of the former owners had bought out the rights to the “Woodstock” name; but nothing more.

This kind-of makes sense; there has always been a link between Woodstock and the Akuna Club. I know Roy the foul-tempered alcoholic grill cook worked at both.
