Woolford - Cursed? Or Stupid?

The Canberra Times is taking an astonishingly sympathetic line to Raider’s mindless thug hooker Simon Woolford’s latest tangle with the judiciary.

It seem’s there’s a “curse” to blame for the seemingly endless run of suspensions and not an overly agressive tackling style trying to compensate for a lack of talent.

“Some players get cursed with injury [but] I’m being cursed with my tackling technique at the moment.”

Also this corker:

“I don’t know, the more I think about it the more I get in strife so I don’t know what to do really.”

Tackling technique? Why is this a problem peculiar to Germ? There are hundreds of other player in the NRL who seem to be able to grasp the point that if you hit someone in the head you are likely to get into strife – thus I say stupid as opposed to ‘cursed’.

I do think it unusual that his first five or six seasons he didn’t get put on report – and in the last three years he’s has more bench-time than the water boy. Go figure.

Since the NRL saw fit to make the role of the hooker in league completely redundant by allowing halfbacks to feed the second row directly, I think the talent pool of hookers has pretty much dried up.

Wooldford shouldn’t take anything that the judiciary dishes out to heart though. This time next year he’ll be playing in the UK, where their game is more about thuggery and less about skill.

Stupid….shame as he had a good game on Saturday!

Unlucky in this case – stupid and overly aggressive in most of the others. There will be benefits though – Withers will play hooker, and Will Zillman will come into halfback…

I say total lack of talent
