Work Safety Commissioner says "how about this heat?"

Worksafe have noticed it’s bloody hot outside:

Climbing temperatures this week have prompted an urgent warning from the Work Safety Commissioner, Mr Mark McCabe, reminding employers of the risks associated with extreme heat.

ACT employers are being urged to consider thermal comfort and sun safety in assessing the risk associated with business as usual.

“People who may be at risk include anyone working outdoors. We need to think more broadly about who is affected by heat hazards. Construction and road workers must take precautions and adapt work practices in hot conditions however this also applies to other groups, for example people in child care or working at sport and recreation venues and mobile health professionals,” said Mr McCabe.

“Employers also need to be aware of what is expected of young people in the workforce. They often work casual hours during really busy times in hospitality and recreational venues. Thinking about the effect of heat and the sun may be the last thing on their mind.

“I strongly recommend a number of heat safety strategies including regular breaks away from hot environments, ensuring plenty of water is available as well as sun protection and a willingness to change work practices to suit the conditions.

I saw the heading for this article and I thought I was the only one who would have thought of that song. It seems a lot of people heard it in 1993 despite Rage refusing to play it in the Top 50 at the time and only JJJ having it on the regular playlist.

They were brave enough to play it on commercial radio in Perth, though it was usually edited. I do recall one instance where they played the unedited version on one of nightly countdown shows, and the DJ defended the choice by pointing out that “asshole” wasn’t technically a swear word in Australia.

I did buy the album years later, must figure out where I “stored” it.

I remember the song, even have the album on cassette somewhere, but didn’t remember this line. Chalk one up to the music tragics.

He’s not as bad as Guilia. Sometimes she parks in handicapped spaces while handicapped people make handicapped faces!

(Maybe I shouldn’t be singing this song.)

I was driving along Yamba Drive to the hospital yesterday, at around 1pm, and there were a couple of blokes laying stone on the slope above where the new path has been laid. I reckon each block would have been close to 10kg, and they were working in full sun, on a bare dirt slope with sand laid where they were working.

Couldn’t believe that anyone would be doing such hard labour in that heat – I just hoped that these guys were hard-as, and thought that it was nothing, but suspect that if they weren’t torturing themselves out there, they’d be losing money. Hell of a way to make a living…

Thank you Mary Poppins.

Hopefully Katy, if looking for some budget cuts, has noted a clearly superfluous employee.

I bet he drives really slow in the ultrafast lane while people behind him are going insane.

And feels the heat below the cockles, maybe the sub-cockle area.
