The workplaces of Canberra are talking table tennis after the inaugural leg of the 2021 Table Tennis Corporate Cup found Canberra’s top workplace team at the ACT Table Tennis headquarters at Kingston on Friday, 23 April.

A team from Services Australia won the event from Icon Water and Canberra Innovation Network, while teams from Northrop Engineering, Dixon Advisory, Nexia Canberra and MODIS also took part.

The Services Australia team is now eligible to take part in a national tournament run by Table Tennis Australia to find the top corporate team.

Table Tennis ACT president Heather Tomlinson said while the focus of the tournament was on fun and introducing new players to the sport, the competition featured participants of all abilities.

“Our club has strong participation among junior and senior players so this competition has focused on the 25-40 age group,” said Ms Tomlinson. “It was great to see a real mix of players and a range of abilities.

“Everyone who played got a prize, and we even had dual Olympian Melissa Tapper on hand to present all the females who took part with a signed table tennis ball.”

Table Tennis Corporate Cup program manager Patrick Wuertz said the sport can be a fundamental part of social interactions in the workplace, while boosting morale and creating networking opportunities.

“Table tennis is an inclusive and accessible sport that gives everyone the opportunity to have a go and spend some time having fun with their colleagues,” he said.

“The Corporate Cup can play an important role in engaging staff and building a healthy corporate culture, and we hope many companies will take table tennis into their workplace and leverage the benefits it can provide to their workforce.”

The 2021 Table Tennis Corporate Cup took part in five Australian states and territories – in the cities of Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne – throughout March and April.

There are already plans for the next Table Tennis Corporate Cup so now is the time to get your workmates together and transform the office table into a makeshift table tennis table.
