Chief Minister Stanhope has announced changes to Aikman Drive in Belconnen, particularly where it intersects Ginninderra Drive and Joy Cummins Place:

Mr Stanhope said $2.4m will be spent on an upgrade to the Ginninderra Drive-Aikman Drive intersection.

The work will improve traffic control and flows into and out of this busy intersection while also providing access to Lawson.

Work has commenced and is expected to be completed towards the middle of the year.

A further $750,000 will be spent improving the Aikman Drive-Joy Cummins Place intersection, a project initiated after discussions with the residents of the nearby Kangara Waters Retirement Village.

Mr Stanhope said the works have started and followed concerns raised by residents of the retirement village who regularly cross Aikman Drive to catch a bus.

“Following discussions with the residents, the ACT Government undertook a review of the intersection to see how it could be improved,” Mr Stanhope said.

“The $750,000 project will make it easier for vehicles to turn right into and out of Joy Cummings Place and provide a safe pedestrian crossing to the bus stop on Aikman Drive.

“We will also be constructing a footpath connecting Joy Cummings Place to Ginninderra Drive.

The works are expected to be complete by August.

Looks like yet another set of traffic lights for Belconnen. Seriously, is there anywhere esle in the world with that many traffic lights per head of population??

So no mention of duplicating the remaining 800m of Aikman Drive using the already provisioned area set up when the single lane road was built in the 70?s?

Exactly like Kuringa Dr and William Slim Dr. The area’s there, use it.

So no mention of duplicating the remaining 800m of Aikman Drive using the already provisioned area set up when the single lane road was built in the 70’s? Of course not, that would be far too logical. Lets just plough more taxpayers money into putting bandaids on a broken leg.
