I’m badly affected by this as my house is ready to move in but no power… still in apartment with huge mortgage/rent/storage costs etc…. can’t shop around for power as we stuck with ACTEW monopoly in Canberra…

Anyone else affected?

What part of if actewagl was owned and ran by act government would be safer, cheaper and better for canberra as a whole do you not understand?

and?

Hang on a second. ACTEWAGL is a joint venture for marketing purposes between the government owned ACTEW corporation and the private Jemena who own the AGL brand.

When it comes to maintenance and connection of the respective supplies, ACTEW does the power and Jemena the gas. In other words at the physical end nothing has changed.

So from a power perspective ACTEW is 100% government owned, so that kinda throws your theory out the window.

Your statement is wrong. Jemena do not own the AGL brand… AGL is a listed company on the stock market. Jemena is a business owned by SP Ausnet.

Actew and Jemena own 50/50 of the Distribution business
Actew and AGL own 50/50 of Retail business

Would not be a issue if it was entirely government owned and ran.

Why?

Well firstly, better and more strict ohs training

I don’t believe the old fully Government owned ‘Actew’ ever ran a gas operation. Though I may be wrong on this.

But if they did?

What part of ACT Electricity and Water sans gas don’t you understand?

Silence, I am asking the questions here. Cheaper, yes. Not necessarily the other two.

If ACTEW is prohibited from doing those earthworks, why can’t they engage someone else who has had the required training to carry out that part of the job until their own staff have completed the training.

Surely the expense would be less than the cost of the ongoing bad publicity.

Correct. AGL was seperate, ACTEW as it’s name implies was water and electricity only.

What a pack of whingers. Really. Yes it isn’t good because your hookup has been delayed, but the issue is being caused by a knee jerk reaction by the safety regulator, not through any wrong doing, incompetence or monopoly behaviour by ACTEW AGL.

I was fortunate enough that it hasn’t affected us with our building as we were wondering what the delay was. When I spoke to the woman at actewagl she was pretty scathing of the fact that they ran the gas and electricity to the same pit in the first place.

This is only one of the many reasons why this disgusting monopoly is bad for Canberra.

The ‘monopoly’ is irrelevant in this case as that relates to the retail business. This is a network (poles + wires) issue and I’m yet to know of a distrubition business that has competition anywhere in the country.

Don’t like ActewAGL billing you… switch to energyaustralia – but they have higher tarrifs

It may be costing you money but it also may be saving someones life

If ACTEWAGL has been contracted to carry out certain work and then has a Workcover ban placed on those works, it doesn’t matter whether they have a monopoly or not.

I suggest you check out the cost of a temporary generator hook up
