The ACT Work Safety Commissioner has announced that Cafes and Takeaways are to be the target of a compliance campaign:

Announcing the campaign today, Attorney General Simon Corbell said the campaign would focus on work safety practices in kitchens and service areas and what responsibility business owners were taking to eliminate or minimise risk of harm in these areas.

“lnjuries arising from manual tasks and slips, trips and falls impose a considerable human and financial burden on both businesses and their workers, yet they are often avoidable,” Mr Corbell said.

WorkSafe ACT inspectors will assess the initial level of compliance by each business inspected.

“ln some cases they will provide guidance and assistance to the businesses concerned. In others, areas for prompt improvement will be identified. Should the inspectors identify serious health and safety issues, they will take steps to enforce the legislation to address the businesses’ kitchen and service safety where necessary.

And not before time for many of them we imagine.

#2 hit the nail on the head.
#7 they’ve done that before – smoking in clubs.

Why don’t Worksafe Inspectors and ACT Health Inspectors “hit” the same eatery’s at the same time and provide a public report for all to view – or is that too stressful for Corbs and Katydid to handle.

I’ll just say that again I think, due to finger fudging of my worms.

Oh, and a friend who is a senior nurse with some 20+ years experience, recently had an hours session from H&S, which could have been boiled down to; “It’s a good idea to wash your hands.” No shit Sherlock.

Well I thought it apt.

Here in work we had a H&S chap come around and tell us all how to sit in a chair, how to bend from the waist, and how we were not to carry more than 6 sheets of 4A paper at a trime, for fear of damaging ourselves. Such good and informative stuff, I was spell bound. I had to laugh as myself and my colleage, (who is nearly six foot four and over 100 kilos, all muscle) who was sat next to me, are both keen gym rats, this person looked like he’d snap in a strong breeze. And yet he was giving us advice?

Still, it keeps the ineffectual and incompetant in jobs I suppose.

I had to look up that song PB, it was sung by an English Folk Singer, it should stay that way….

Now, I was just an ordinary Aussie man,
Till I got me uniform, and hat,
And ever since that hour, I exercise me power,
Preventing you from doing this and that.

You’ll find me on the turnstiles at the zoo,
Or outside the Roxy, marshalling the queue,
And if you turn up late, when I’m on the gate,
It’s no good asking me to let you through… ’cause I’ll just say:

Jobsworth, josbsworth; it’s more than my job’s worth.
I don’t care, rain or snow, whatever you want – the answer’s no!
I can keep you standing, for hours in the queue,
And if you don’t like, you know what you can do! (A…a…ah…ah)

When you’re trying to see, what the butler saw,
I’m the one who says; “Come on, move on!”,
And if you want to stay, you’ll have to bleedin’ pay,
And even then you can’t stay long.

You may be almost dropping dead from thirst,
Or waiting for the toilet, fit to burst,
But I’ve got the key … and you won’t get that from me,
Until I’ve had me little grumble first!

Jobsworth, josbsworth; it’s more than my job’s worth.
I don’t care, rain or snow, whatever you want – the answer’s no!
I can keep you standing, for hours in the queue,
And if you don’t like, you know what you can do! (La, la, la, la, la, la, la la la la, la, la)

Spoken: (Yes, well, I died in the last war for people like you … don’t you forget it!)

Perhaps it is the fall out from the Delissio explosion just recently? (no pun intended).

“lnjuries arising from manual tasks and slips, trips and falls impose a considerable human and financial burden on both businesses and their workers, yet they are often avoidable,” Mr Corbell said.

A motherhood statement.

Just how many injuries have be incurred from manual tasks, slips and falls in cafes and takeaways would have been more informative.

Otherwise it looks like worksafe is bored out of its brain and looking for something to do.
