World’s biggest useless thing attempt powering along thanks to Althea O'Rourke

In February we were intrigued by the Library Service’s efforts to knit the world’s biggest bookmark.

Knitted bookmarks being not particularly useful at the best of times and even less so when 4km long. (I would go so far as to say 20cm of yarn is a more useful bookmark than anything you could knit).

Today they’re letting us know that 5,000 bookmarks have been produced for joining into the monster mark.

Dickson Library has been inundated with knitted donations, receiving 5,000 individual bookmarks as part of its National Year of Reading challenge to create Canberra’s longest bookmark. Volunteer Althea O’Rourke donated 1,000 bookmarks to this great project.

“In February, keen volunteers were invited to get knitting with the intention of creating a bookmark that equals the distance between Dickson and Civic libraries – that’s just over four kilometres,” said Vanessa Little, Director, Libraries ACT.

“A total of 19,381 bookmarks (21cm long x 6cm wide) are needed to create this enormous knitted bookmark. The group hopes this initiative will set a Guinness World Record.

Having set the record they plan to call on yet more volunteer labor to reconstitute the mammoth effort into blankets to be foisted on an as yet unspecified charity.

We hope everyone’s having fun in this strange pointless consumption of time and resources.

If, however, you want to get involved you can donate wool at Civic or Dickson Libraries and Wednesdays at 1.30pm you can marvel at Althea’s bookmark making at Dickson Library (and join in of course).

Oh dear! That boy has dropped a stitch, Mabel.

He’s fixed it now, dear. Poke him with your needle again though, I like the way he jumps…
