In case anyone cares… ANU made it to number 56 in this top 500 list of world universities, produced by the Institute of Higher Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Melbourne Uni was next for Australia at 82. The methodology for the ranking is here. Looks like UC didn’t make it.

Kerces, thanks for the tip. I usually try to steer clear of phoning, but this is probably one time I need to suck it up and dial away.

Mr. Evil, I don’t mean to avoid your question, but I’m trying to keep something of an air of anonymity as I use this name on all manner of websites. However, if you’d like to email me at MortonTFogg@gmail.com, I’d be happy to discuss things if you have stuff that would be good for me to know.

Morton, which school are you after?

Morton, get on the phone. I’ve found that to be the most effective way to deal with uni bureaucracy (and i’ve had to deal with a lot of it), because once you get hold of someone they can transfer you and so on.

Terubo — to be honest, thus far I’ve been fighting through autoreply notes from the graduate school and trying to get through to a real person or student!

Hi MortonT, sorry – have only just seen your quezzie from this morning.
It was a bit different for me, I was doing a post-grad as a part-timer (3 years instead of 1); and given I was an out-of-towner, I only rocked up from a great distance for the lecture/seminars once a week. But the full-timers seemed to have a gas, some were in Uni res., and had plenty of time together at a local hostelry called the Wig & Pen I think.
-Why not ask the School to put you in touch with former/current students – they can answer your questions?
PS: Having done a couple of other degrees elsewhere, I found the lecturing/seminar activity comparatively GOOD.

Terubo (Kerces too, if doing a graduate degree), do you feel it has good support for its graduate students? Any pluses, minuses, in your book?

I have been accepted to a graduate program at ANU, but I don’t live anywhere remotely near it, so it’s been difficult for me to find too much information about the school apart from the web site.

I go to both unis at once (though that finishes this year) and I like them both. Must say though that it’s taken me three years to find the Menzies library at ANU — before I just would ignore any books in the catalogue that weren’t in Chifley. A smaller campus has its advantages.

Great place. Haven’t found a ‘proper’ job since completing my MA(Hons) however.

Anyone here attend ANU? Desperately seeking some first-hand accounts of the place.
