Chief Minister Stanhope is offering free business advice!

“Every business operator is feeling the impact of the global economic downturn. The Business Health Checks program is another free service to be offered by CanberraBusinessPoint, and adds to the comprehensive suite of advisory and mentoring programs currently on offer for all Canberra businesses.”

Business Health Checks seminars will be conducted monthly, with a maximum of 20 participants at each session. Information and registration details are available via the Canberra BusinessPoint website, www.canberrabusinesspoint.com.au. The program will be promoted via Canberra BusinessPoint newsletters, mailouts and networking events.”

Possibly a good networking opportunity though.

The Canberra Business Council also hold a series of presentations called the Business Solutions Breakfasts on the first Tuesday of every month where a new topic id covered every month on how to make your business more successful and profitable. Go to http://www.canberrabusinesscouncil.com.au/pages/index.asp and check out the upcoming events green box for all the topics. Theyre great!!

They are hoping to engender something similar to Stockholm syndrome.

Spoiler: “See what we did with the GDE? Don’t do that.”

Y’all ought to do more research before you go shooting your keyboards off. I can see that none of you actually bothered to go to the CBP website.

CanberraBusinessPoint is run by Deloitte (ie. real business people) on behalf of the ACT government. They run a series of 6 seminars for small busniess startups and existing owners, and you get 3 hours of free mentoring on top of that.

I did Business Basic 1 and 2 through CBP and I thought it was excellent, as did the others who did the courses with me. Both for information purposes, and for networking, the CBP courses were outstanding.

Try taking a non-cynical perspective for once – you might learn something. Government gets far more things right than it gets wrong, and we tend to forget that because we only hear about the wrong.

ruffnready, there are some excellent small buiness networking events around at the moment, as well as info via the Fed Govt initiatives. the act govt advisory service is run by deloittes, but has a cap on the number of attendees for the events that they run. it is a bit limiting to impose a total number of attendees of 40 per event. granted, they are free events, but I would prefer to have access to an event with far more than 40, as this will limit the networking potential.

have a look at smartcompany.com.au – they advise small business, or the forum businessbrains.com.au – members are predominately small business owners. there are several events run by industry associations which can help as well.

Asking any government for business advice is like asking a Catholic priest for marriage guidance or sex counselling. They aren’t in the same game as you but they still want to act like experts…

The Stanhope government telling people how to run a business is a bit like Nero giving a lecture about fire control.

Nero knew more about fire control than Jon Stanhope did.

yeah, but they both fiddled…

Not even in partnership with the ACT and Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Canberra Business Council. How can a government hope to have any credibility with local industry if they don’t involve business and industry themselves?

The services they offer are all available from the chamber of commerce for members.

yeah, but act govt don’t want you signed up with the chamber, they want you to come to them when you have a problem, not be a part of the problem…

mind you, the links are hot in the emailled version so it could be their CMS is playing silly buggers.

I always assumed some borderline moron was told to make it look like a hyperlink without every figuring out how to make it a hyperlink.

Whoever’s checking their work then assumes what looks like a hyperlink is a hyperlink.

Pet gripe about Stanhope’s webpages:
Underlining something does not make it a hyperlink.
