Would you like some interpretive signs with your walk to Parliament House?

Shane Rattenbury has announced a piddling $200,000 will be spent on a pathway from Civic to Parliament House:

Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury, today joined Federal Minister for Regional Australia, Local Government and Territories, Catherine King, to announce the start of works on a dedicated pathway between Canberra’s city centre and Parliament House.

“I’m pleased to have had the opportunity to celebrate the start of works on the Parliament House Walk alongside Minister King today,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“The Australian and ACT Governments are jointly funding this $200,000 project which will provide a 3.4 kilometre guided path from the Jolimont Centre in the City through to new Parliament House. The Australian Government gifted $100,000 to the ACT Government in the 2012-13 Federal Budget, in recognition of our centenary year.

Minister King said that the path will encourage locals and visitors to appreciate both the historical and contemporary faces of the Nation’s Capital.

Why yes, headline writer, I would like some signs on the walk. Perhaps, first a low stick one has to bend under. Then a big flashing neon sign saying:

‘Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch’intrate’

obstructing the view of Parliament House. Which translated on a nearby plinth reads ‘Oh well, could be worse’ in tiny beige letters. That sentence is annoyingly hard to decipher.

(Yes, the order and a few other things have changed, I know.)

Aw, rats! I saw ‘interpretive’ and wanted ‘interpretive dance’

So why is it costing so much to build what is already in place? Just a couple of “This Way” signs here and there eh? Ridiculous.

A “3.4 kilometre guided path” for $200k IS just a couple of “This Way” signs here and there!

I hope this also includes enough money to *finally* remove the six dead trees on Commonwealth Avenue between Albert Hall/Hyatt Hotel and the Treasury/West Bock buildings too. Unless of course the dead trees are actually an artistic metaphor for ‘dead wood’ in the public service, in which case you should signpost these as well.

And to think I laughed at my mate when he took a job as a signwriter …

All jokes aside there are two footpaths that run down either side of Federation Mall and in fact I believe it’s possible to get from Civic to NPH without ever leaving the footpath apart from having to cross the road in a few places.

Federation Mall is surely all a pedestrian could ever ask for?

50 metres wide?

I only know about the road ramp in the middle of Adelaide Avenue. Guessing this is a Mall without any shops? Even more confusing!

Is this going to be called “Sky-trail”?

Yeah but it’s not stiletto friendly..

Not all the way it doesn’t.The ramp up to Parliament House isn’t pedestrian friendly.

You couldn’t even get a consultant’s report about how to get pedestrian access up there for $200k.

$200k doesn’t buy much path but probably not many signs either!

Has anyone told the Governments that there’s a nice triple lane road going from the city center to Parliament House, and guess what… it has a path on both sides of it.

Wow! Who’s getting rich from this one? $200k to build a path that already exists… nice work!

I foresee them digging up the existing path, putting it down again, then inviting the press to see what a grand idea they had. Unbelievable!

Digging up and putting down for $200k?

You can’t build a seagull T intersection for less than $5 million once the consultants have been in!

They are wasting money, there’s already a path there! So why is it costing so much to build what is already in place? Just a couple of “This Way” signs here and there eh? Ridiculous.

Thank goodness! Like this. Been wanting something like this for some time now!

Is there room for a Segway?

Oh! I do hope they garnish this latest waste of money with lots more public art…..

Can anyone tell me what has happened to the “Immigration Footbridge” that was going to across the lake?

It’s now going to be a monument on Kings Avenue.
