Would you like to "suggest an overall cohesive system of urban open space."?

The Canberra Times informs us that the parkland between Commonwealth and Kings Avenues is set to be ravaged with redevelopment despite being wildly popular just as it is.

Some lip service is being paid to not messing with things too much:

“NCA chief executive Annabelle Pegrum said the competition would help create public spaces with improved amenities.

“Heritage values and special places and features, such as Blundells Cottage and the national monuments will be protected,” she said.

“The features you love about Commonwealth Park will be retained and it will be better integrated with Kings Park.”

Who would rather the money be spent on green and open spaces thoughout the whole of the city rather than the one mega park by the lake?

Separate paths for cyclists and wanderers are a great idea.
Steps up to Kings Bridge would be nice too.

Second that suggestion re the lake path, astrojax. And when the developers do finally reopen the path round there I reckon there’ll be a couple of nice cafes along there as well.

More like a cata-strophe.

i’d sooner see the money spent first up on the completion of the cycle path loop by the lakeside. the fact that the link from the wetlands near pialligo to kingston is missing is atrocious.

but a cafe out there might be a catalyst!

The less they mess around with it, the better. As it is, most of Commonwealth park looks really artificial and most of the flora is non-native, which also means it needs more water to sustain. This sort of unnecessary counter-development is counter-productive. Can’t we leave the shops a few metres down the road in Civic?

And a sex shop, don’t forget the sex shop.

Al, could you put a through fast food joints in that proposal, I will need some motivation to walk.

Dunno what you’re complaining about JB. As a public servant I need to top up my caffeine levels about every 500 metres when I go ride around the basin. So another 50-odd cafes, interspersed with 30-odd extra toilets will be just the trick. And I don’t know about you, but I’m always leaving my Drizabone and boomerang at home, so 10-12 of those Australiana tourist shops wouldn’t hurt either.
And I often feel the desperate need to have a quick splurge on the pokies, so one or two annexes to the casino would be great.
Look the NCA could just model it all on Southbank on the Yarra River – beautiful!
Plenty of accessible facilities will help us enjoy our natural experience no end.

I do hope this means more Atlas cedars.

It seems like a waste of money- I ride round the lake for training all the time and always see heaps of joggers, walkers, families/couples… always having BBQ’s and what not.

I’m going to be selfish here- but if they do redevelop, they should not make it the disaster that is Commonwealth Place. Build separate cycling and cruisy walking paths- it’s plain dangerous having no lines on the path. People walking in every direction with no safe way to pass them.

Quick answer: nope.

I’d love for the local idiot factory to get a little more responsible for their own ‘backyard’ so to speak, and shelve pie in the sky ideas such as Aboretum II, Siev X memorials, International Bills of Human Rights as agreed to by the independent state of Canberra etc.

Then, in future, we could even offer to maintain the NCA’s parklands, who would have thought such charity could be maintained by the peoples of Canberra ?

We might even find the Big Government might be a little more tolerant of us whinging at their ratbag nature every now and again as long as we continued to do them some favours here and there.

spent on green and open spaces thoughout the whole of the city

Problem with that is that the NCA doesn’t fund parkland throughout Canberra. They only manage the Parliamentary Triangle, and a few other random spots like Pierces Creek.
