[First filed 31 December 2007]

Someone is out to prove a point about privacy in public spaces (the internet) by collecting and publishing picture of Canberra users from MySpace on the billboards around Canberra.

The site can be found HERE.

I guess the moral to the story is: Caveat Emptor – Let the blogger beware

[Ed — UPDATE: The Sydney Morning Herald has picked up the story and tracked down one Reuben Ingall, the site’s creator. They also refer indirectly to RA.]

poster boards are a public medium

yeah right,
You could start by following your own rules.
case in point, anyways thats exactly what i was talking about mr. smug

As for people obviously telling me that i need to chill and not be so angry, god, find yourself something original and perhaps a little witty to say before you comment, k?

You could start by following your own rules.

wow, i personally think your a fuckwit after seeing this, if people really need it brough to there attention how easily they can be tracked down using the internet and how little it protects there privacy they dont deserve any in the first place.

your activity has taken up valuable space on bollards in civic where bands post and if you postered over anything god am i cut.
as one who has spent hours postering simply to have posters put on top within days i can tell you you’re pointless activity is just something thats pissed off many people.

as for your whole rant about people being able to simply message you to have it removed, fuck that, if i see my picture on there im not gonna be impressed, in fact i might be so unimpressed i’ll take a leaf outta your book and pull up some shit on you reuben, if that is you …

anyways point is, i hope you get cancer and die, your a fuckin moron who deserves nothing better then to burn with the vapid crowd that decides that having ones poster plastered around civic is going to be a great way to validate themselves.

and if this is your image of art, on a personal level if you died i’d probably clap, not cause id make a fortune by ripping it down but the fact that your stupid shit would be ripped off from civic.

As for people obviously telling me that i need to chill and not be so angry, god, find yourself something original and perhaps a little witty to say before you comment, k?

I definitely recognise one person I know, and I think another!

To Sev. What was the goddamn point? You can’t do much with a photo anyway, except masturbate over it. It’s not like most myspaces provide information such as your home adress, ph number etc – unless your stupid enough to put them up there, in which case you deserve to be stalked. An amazing amount of people I don’t know probably have my photo. I’ve had my photo in the newspaper, in the BMA, on a friends band’s page – in fact there’s video footage of me pissed and yelling at musicians onstage in the possession of some band from brisbane – and I could not for one second give a rats arse about that. If people want to masturbate over my likeness, then it’s their psychiatric issues, not mine.
All you’ve done is piss off some rather sensitive people and expose yourself to possible legal troubles. Clap effing clap.

PS Please don’t put my south-park avatar myspace picture up in Civic. Please.

Al: I suspect they’re actually talking about TSSH. The top comment there mentions government money.

“Responding to a blog post that presumed, because all the action took place in Canberra, that government money was involved…”

Just where is such a claim made on this blog? Creative licence?

West_Kambah_4eva12:18 pm 09 Jan 07

hey sev, i was walking past when you were pasting the things up, and i saw those other guys that nearly bashed you right there for pasting over their stuff.

I love the sound of people missing the point. *whooooosh*

Sev – can you print out a bunch of my photos and plaster them all over civic for me ?

if you found her myspace profile you’d know… 🙂
i figured that pic was probably fake, but i put it in anyway.

Page 2, 3rd row, 4th across. She’s hot! What’s her name, where’s she work???

Anyone who doesn’t want their picture “plastered all over civic” (or anywhere else) shouldn’t be so stupid as to put it on a medium with billions of users.

Here’s a little tip that is generally kept secret, to all you people who use the net: Other people use the net too.

No, don’t thank me, that’s free.

Got the triangl ebracket the wrong way around in the above post and it failed to show so ill try again

Danmans Photos.

Bugger i hope i disabled my adult friendfinder and over40 friend finder and fatogramfriend finder accounts.

As for photos – generally all mine on the internet have me standing behind the camera – quite happy for thyem to be freely distro’d woth credit to me. A select few have me standing in front of the camera – but I usually put on my trunk monkey pose and try to look tough 🙂

Have a look’n’see

hahaha. poor people and their supposed privacy.

Been there, done that. if you want to disappear it’s best not to appear in the first place.

look sev, Im willing to be understandable more about it now, if you are willing to take photos down thats different. Just dont go putting me up there, Id rather not be seen in civic.

And dont find my rsvp profile either :D, although you need my password to get my photo.

I think it’s an interesting project. It’s certainly got people talking about privacy and identity on the ‘net, which seems to have been the point.

if an individual wanted me to take their photo down, i think i would. if someone’s that unhappy about it i don’t wanna risk provoking em into legal action which would suck.
link to those pics much appreciated geoffco!! with your permission i’d like to use them on the site.
everyone should check that brisk/mightyfew show in the 4th shot too

Actually it looks pretty cool.

How about Sev you leave kids on myspace alone and pick on the losers trying to get a root on the personals sites (www.adultmatchmaker.com.au http://www.rsvp.com.au etc)

hahaha, didnt take long for someone to cover it up, shows how much they thought about the idea.

Wandering through Civic today I bumped into a bunch of the posters up on the poster post things.
Photos here…

I recognise two of the ppl. One has long returned to France so I dare say she’s not bothered.

The guy resembling Feminem, holding the gun, looks most amusing.

Copyright etc. laws, I think, will never really work on the interwebs, even though Governments and corporations may try.

On the internet is one thing, but for me it qould be confronting to walk into civic and see my photo.

Out of interest sev, if someone asks you to take down there photo, will you be willing to do it?

Am i the only person who thinks this is an interesting thing to have done?

When i put a photo on myspace, i’m fine with the idea people are gonna see it – you’re naive if your not. His valid point is that it should be far less confronting to post a photo in garema place than on the world wide web. Yet everyone seems to feel the opposite – that’s interesting and I think that’s art.

I’m sure it’s illegal. But there’s a moral line too, and i don’t think that’s been crossed it. http://www.myspace.com/didrain – here’s my myspace, go for your life.

oh and apologies for the adware/spyware thing, my computer doesn’t like it either. part and parcel of free dot.tk domains apparently.

i’m not a dickhead, i’m an idiot. a sad single one. come beat me up. randomblokeperson’s little see-how-you-like-it revenge was petty-funny, and i must say the plug of my music was quite unexpected.

but really, discussion of these issues/etc was the point so i’m surprised at how ‘successful’ the project has been in just two days.

please take note, i’m not out to harass anyone or single anyone out. my intent is harmless and cautionary. unless you think i’m a real twat i’d appreciate any links to other discussions.

thankyou for your comments,

peace

No point… just alot of spare time and no girlfriend.

Does this dickhead have a point?

wow, we were just talking about this on livejournal..

I better not be on there.
and for that matter, i better not be on some pole in civic..

I think the moral of the story is don’t post shit on the internets that you don’t want other people to steal. You wouldn’t put a bag of money on your verrandah hoping no-one will pinch it becasue trespassing is illegal.

I post images to flickr. Nothing I post is over 1024 in resolution. This way I retain exclusive rights to print high quality photos if I choose to do so. There is also no question who owns the images (as I have the original).

The old rule of thumb applied to email was never email something you wouldn’t want said over a loudspeaker..same applies here. If you don’t want domeone pinching your images then don’t post them.

Having said all that, this guy is being a dick. It’s akin to me breaking into your house just to prove your place is insecure.

Erm, yeah. I mean it’s in line with that rule *blushes*

Perceived is an exception to that rule, Danman.

Cant spell either – not that I am the best either – but he/she spelt percieved wrong I before E except after C – even stoners know that.

But then myspace would own its your photo rights? so it would still be illegal?

randomblokeperson3:53 pm 31 Dec 06

“Once you put something on the net in effect you have lost control over it.”

Perhaps you could argue that with the 13 year old’s on MySpace, but in the world of Australian Law; you retain your Copyright, unless you sign it away; as in the of MySpace terms and conditions.

hahaha, if thats him a quick google shows that Rueben’s myspace for music is http://www.myspace.com/sevenen

and could that be him in his photos.

Breach of copyright or not his point is still valid, Idiots like him have your picture. Once you put something on the net in effect you have lost control over it.

to quote the site:
“Publicly available information and media is public domain, not necessarily in a legal sense, but in a practical sense.”

&

“website and original content © the author 2006, but who’s gonna stop you?”

I’m not saying be afraid, nor do I think he is, but be aware.

Information is power, be careful who you give it to.

randomblokeperson3:49 pm 31 Dec 06

This could even be his own, Myspace page. http://www.myspace.com/sevenen

randomblokeperson3:43 pm 31 Dec 06

I have studied art, and while I think this work of art interesting. I cannot help but notice his fragrant breech of many intellectual property rights. How would he feel, if people were to find out – as I did in under 2 minutes – that his name is Reuben XXXXX, he studies at the Australian National University, in the field of computer music and interactive digital media and his phone number may, or may not be: (02) 6247 XXXX. He too may feel violated.

[post edited by Admin (Ntp) – regardless of whether the info you posted was accurate, and I agree your point is – which I think is also his point, just because he does something you don’t like doesn’t give you free reign to not play nice here on Riot. As Che says – if you don’t like it get your own damn site]

Taken off myspace

#
# The MySpace Services contain Content of MySpace.com (“MySpace.com Content”). MySpace.com Content is protected by copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret and other laws, and MySpace.com owns and retains all rights in the MySpace.com Content and the MySpace Services.

So from what I gather in short, it is illegal what the site is doing. I shall let you know if I find out anymore.

schmerica_ you are exactyly right, you did not consent him to using your photo, while myspace is a public domain the photos once uploaded remain the property of myspace until take down.

I have changed my photo back over, and set my profile to private (again). I do know a few profiles in the photos though.

Big deal. I think most people realise that the internet is a public place. Whoever runs that website is a)someone who needs to get a life and b)running spyware on their website, according to my antivirus software.

Im kinda worried now… I don’t really want my face plastered all over civic considering I didnt consent to him using my photo.

And 99% are sooooo young

You’re not wrong…

omg. they all look like losers anyway.

thank christ i am not up there. although my profile picture is like a sliced of fried gold, by the way.
