Yellowtails?

I keep hearing from New-South-Welshmen that Canberrans call NSW drivers “Yellowtails” on account of the yellow number plates.

After four years in Canberra I have never heard anyone say this. Do Canberrans ever call NSW drivers yellowtails or is it a yellowtail delusion?

Yes, and they call Canberra “the place with all the roundabouts”.

those yellowtails’ll tell ya any old guff to to put the wind up ya…

Almost four decades in Canberra, never heard of it. Maybe it’s subliminal reptoid messages or space rays that have implanted this thought?

Never heard it in the 25 years since I’ve been back.

Thirty odd years in the ‘berra for me and I’ve never heard of it until now. Although have heard of Canberra drivers being called “Yogis”, as in Yogi Bear, because of the Y number plates.

Yogi Berra, perhaps?

Good pickup. Although I’m still thinking Yogi Bear is meant to be mildly offensive.

I’ll add my 2 cents worth … 35+ years and never heard it. Shoulder? Chip? Much? Not sure, you didn’t indicate whether they found it offensive or not. I’m more apt to hear NSW referred to as ‘the place where indicators are a dirty word’, but like all bad driving habits, this is one of those generalisations. There are plenty of Y platers that don’t use them either.

40+ years, 2nd generation Canberran. Never heard of it before.

Total of almost 20 years in Canberra over the last 30 or so… Never heard the term before. I have heard the Yogies one, although not all that often.

Never.

News to me.

As above – 30+ years and never heard the phrase. I think your NSW friends might have a bit of a complex – imagining we’re calling them names behind their backs.

Over thirty years here for me too, and I have also not heard the term before. I would think the term would be less relevant these days anyway, as the majority of NSW plates I seem to see here these days are of the black and white variety?
