Yes, it really was stinking hot last night

Hurray for weather blogging!

Did last night feel a wee bit sticky? Apparently it really was the second hottest November night in Canberra on record.

7.20am right now and it’s still sweltering, the bureau says it was 23.8 at the airport at 0700. It was snowing last week right?

Before we wet ourselves about global warming let’s remind ourselves that there was a hotter November night on the books.

I thought the butterfly’s wings made it impossible to predict the weather, rather than somehow turning into a cyclone (or a heatwave) down the track; complexity -> unpredictability.

Seepi, I got the whirlybirds installed by Just-Rite in Fyshwick – they popped them in the same time they did the insulation. Fast, professional, looks great – go for it! And I’ve just found out that Luxaire is going to install our ducted evaporative cooler a month early, so I’ll be laughing tomorrow night 😉

As for records – trends and frequency are what counts, not pointing at a single concurrence for a single variable at a single place decades ago then insisting that nothing’s changing globally.

We know from CO2 levels in Antarctic ice that CO2 levels fluctuate all the time, and that temperature is correlated with CO2 levels. People love pointing at the graph and saying “see – it goes up and down all the time”, cycling between 185 and 275 ppmv for 400,000 years. That’s until you zoom in to this century, and show them they’re now about 375 ppmv and climbing – over 300 ppmv for the first time in 400 millenia, and way over at that. This isn’t part of some natural cycle. It hasn’t happened before.

WOODY – who installed your whirlybird? I am trying to get one.

When people say this was the hottest/coldest or whatever-est day in 150* years reassures me that things were the same on the day in question as they were 150* years ago – therefore global warming is just politicians scaremongering and that we are, in fact, just on the top end of a cycle.

*hypothetical number.

I got the butterfly joke and found it rather funny!

Whoop! Sorry – I think Thumper was being flippant.

I think che was being flippant, rather than trying to discredit greenhouse theory (for the sake of brevity I will refer to the theory that human emmissions of CO2 affect climate change as “greenhouse theory”.)

“… you or your Mum?”

Both!

Mr_Shab

Yea, but people tend to throw the butterfly quote in to discredit the total argument.

The theories of evolution and continental drift also had to cope with similar jibes as they evolved.

The other aspect is that melting polar caps has apparently also been observed on Mars.

… you or your Mum?

Two words: sweaty buttcrack!

I’m nocturnal, but only during the mating season.

global warming wouldn’t be a problem if we were nocturnal.

Scientists don’t argue whether global warming occurs. Or global cooling. They do argue about the extent to which human activity can be attributed to it though. And to the reliance on models that al gore harps on about.

W_W, FYI – the butterfly thing was not supposed to be an actual scientific theory. It is just a neat demonstration of how tiny variances in pre-existing conditions can have massive effects further down the line – a central tenet of Chaos Theory.

Also – greenhouse theory is still a theory, not a fact. Zealots deal in fact, scientists in theory. A secularist such as yourself (and like me) should never forget this.

Before you begin ranting, it’s a theory I agree with.

The argument about global warming is more to do with the hard scientific evidence that CO2 concentrations are continually rising and that nitrous oxide damages the ozone layer.

Hard science indicates that this disrupts the Earth’s heat pattern.

Hard science does not watch butterflys fluttering their wings in the Amazon.

Awesome. We got new ceiling insulation installed yesterday and a couple of those whirlybird extractor thingies. Slept under the doona last night – I guess they work!

yuck yuck yuck!!! I hate the swealtering hot weather! and to make matters worse I have been ill and had a damned fever last night too… eugh cant wait to be over and done with Summer, I just hope we at least get some Autumn type of weather.

I like the hot weather too – especially the nights.

bring it on. I loves the hot weather.

The good people at the Canberra Yacht Club have set up a weather station, if you’d like up to the minute updates.

you know its hot when JB starts wearing his hot pants.

That may explain why I ended up hanging off the opposite side of the bed with 1.5 blankets on the floor.

those damn flutterbyes and their freaky wings, its all their fault

I wish we could go back to snow in winter and bushfires in summer with a little bit of decent weather in spring and Autumn between the extremes.

This wouldn’t have happened if we’d
signed up for Kyoto.

And it can’t just be coincidence that
this happens as soon as the government
announces the recommendations that we
go nuclear.

Just join the dots people – the sky is falling!

Last wednesday I went for a run and it snowed – today I have to wear a camelbak to keep hydrated…. Go figure. Was 22 degreees at 0645 (according to 106.3)

A good 10 minuted update canbrerra weather resource can be found here!!
