Yet another Dog incident - and another Coward outs himself!

Well, today at around 10.50am we have just witnessed yet another incident of a dog charging on Horsepark Drive near the new Springbank Rise development. This time a male (mid 30’s and wearing a checked shirt) had two mixed breed dogs (solid looking animals), medium to large size and brown in colour, off the leash and under no control whatsoever. The dogs came out the bushes onto Horsepark Drive from the Springbank Rise Estate and one of them charged a middle aged woman who was alone and walking her two small dogs. As one of the dogs charged the woman, our local coward hid (yes, he actually hid!) in the tree line watching – there was no attempt to go to her aid whatsoever or call the dog off her(we could see this from our house which faces onto Horsepark Drive from the new estate).

Thankfully a passing motorist speed towards the female and collected her and her dogs into the car. We saw that as they did that, our local coward ran, and I do mean ran, further into the treeline away from Horsepark Drive and presumably towards his house – probably painted a bright yellow colour down the middle of the roof judging by his behaviour. He had two small children with him – they must be so proud!!!

The local coward then started to mouth off as we heard the driver of the car (who had kindly collected the woman and her dogs) tell him to keep a leash on the dogs. The local coward started yelling abuse that we couldn’t make out and so, of course, the local coward quickly disappeared into the Springback Rise Estate.

The moral of this story however is that there will be a savage dog attack, with severe injuries, very soon as a result of these dogs not being under control. The council has had sufficient warning now, the Dog Rangers have also received sufficient warning and so when it happens in this area, they can expect to have some considerable litigation launched at them from the victims – along with a considerable amount of support from people who can attest to similar incidents and those warnings being ignored.

So, for God’s sake, do something about it Canberra – before someone really gets injured! Bad things can happen when good people remain silent – or do nothing!

Dogs are social animals, and respond to their owners. If an owner is abusive and erratic, it is (sadly) reasonable to assume that the dog will become violent.

This comment makes no sense. Dogs respond to a dominant owner. An owner who has never trained a dog and lets the dogs do what they want is not at the top of the pack and thus the dogs will do whatever they want without consequence. The owners may love them to bits, but if they are not the alphas in the pack, they won’t have obedient dogs.

You statement is true, but does not contradict mine.

WTF is a pram-rider?

One is a baby, one is a toddler. Small, ride in the pram at about mouth-height of the average Weston Ck canine, somewhat lacking in the self-defence department.

Tsk, that’s your problem. You should be going for walks in a 2-ton SUV.

I agree with you. I’m sure sitting down and having a coffee with Ivan Milat would probably ignite the “isn’t he a nice guy” forum…………………….until you wanted a lift home! And even then, we’d get the usual “but he didn’t mean it” and “surely you did something to initiate it” clowns.

This type of thinking, or lack of it I should say, is really pissing me off.

Yes, saying that two dogs running up to two other dogs is not exactly a world-changing issue is *exactly* like excusing a convicted serial killer. I must let my imagination off the leash a little more.

Yes……..like taking the Dogma for a walk isn’t it (sighs)

Sounds like the dogs just wanted to play, but yes, he should have called them off if the woman was scared. Hardly sounds like an incident that will inevitably lead to a savage dog attack, though, does it?

I don’t like the assumption that all large dogs (or ‘solid dogs’, which sounds like a euphemism for fat) are vicious.

You are the one making the assumption that the dogs just wanted to play. They shouldn’t be allowed out of the yard without a lead, there is no defence for that even if you own a chihuahua. No memeber of the public should have to face a pair of large dogs pelting towards them and their own dogs which they are leaglly walking on a leash.

+1.

I’m getting a little tired of people inflicting their wouldn’t-hurt-a-fly/would-lick-you-to-death-first/just-wants-to-play/say-hello dogs on me and my pram-riders. Especially as we only ever walk on suburban footpaths. When we go to the local parks, I notice there are signs saying dogs must be kept at least 10m away from playing children…but that is blithely ignored too. Maybe it’s just our area.

Agreed – and that about sums up the issue I think.

Just saw all the comments – and thanks. Firstly, we saw this around 100metres away and there wasn’t time for any reaction from us. The car drove up fairly quickly and allowed the female in with her dogs. So, sitting quietly in the loungeroom with the blinds drawn and TV and lights off, as some seem to imagine, didn’t happen.

In relation to the dogs, and the owner, I would say that the owner needed more control and that he obviously didn’t care that much about the dogs charging the woman. Did the dogs bark, snarl, salivate???…………does it really matter? They charged – and the coward owner ran and hid.

What more does an incident need – blood?

A running dog hardly constitutes an attack. Maybe there are some missing details like aggressive barking/growling?

Yet, if someone was to stop the attack, they would be arrested for animal cruelty.

All dogs, like all people, should be assumed to be dangerous unless proven otherwise. That’s just common sense

Sounds scary. I was at the Springbank Rise dog park about 50m away at the time and didn’t see/hear a thing.

I walk around the area every morning and many afternoons and thankfully have never had a huge problem with roaming dogs like some people seem to. My two dogs are always on leash except in designated off leash areas. There are a lot of responsible dog owners in the area.

I would question why you say we need to do something while you sat in your house and watched the whole thing unfold.

The dog owner clearly shouldn’t own a dog, but the world is full of tools and the government is never going to be able protect citizens 100% of the time, particulary in situations like this. Is there an expectation that animal services places a full time ranger at your new estate? I also doubt your chances of litigating the government in this situation – if u had warned the government of a particular dog at a particular address and they continually failed to act, well you might have a case. But apart from the government raiding every house in the area, or placing a ranger there – how do they prevent this? The person that would be sued & charged is the dog owner…. In either case, if this was all that bad, why were you watching it from your house rather than trying to intervene?

Sounds like the dogs just wanted to play, but yes, he should have called them off if the woman was scared. Hardly sounds like an incident that will inevitably lead to a savage dog attack, though, does it?
