The National Capital Authority has the happy news that the refurbished York Park has been officially re-opened.

The National Capital Authority, on behalf of the Australian Government has upgraded the plantation to include new public access paths, stone walls, and seating.

“This heritage listed site has been transformed into an urban parkland, to be enjoyed by generations to come,” Minister Crean said.

This should at least protect the historic trees, some of them planted by King George VI (newly fashionable thanks to The King’s Speech) from car park proponents.

The tree that Georve VI (QEII’s dad) planted is the one on the very corner.

York Park, as it existed on maps a long time ago, is bounded by State Circle, Kings Avenue, Sydney Avenue and Windsor Walk; DFAT is in York Park. As far as the NCA is concerned, for planning purposes, York Park is bounded by State Circle, Canberra Avenue, National Circuit and the footpath on the East Block side of Kings Avenue. This includes the grassland between DFAT and Hotel Realm, which is signposted as York Park.

Excellent explanation, thanks.

I have admired these new features as I drive past of a morning, however I doubt PM&C staffers even get to enjoy daylight, let alone take in the new masonry.

Thank you both.

So, someone has to ask… Where is York Park?

Between pmc and parliament house

Google Maps says that York Park is the bit of scrubland between DFAT and Hotel Realm, which doesn’t seem right. I assume from the PM&C reference above that it’s actually the long-fenced off bit that sits between that Department and Parliament House?

I imagine the staff of PM&C are enjoying the nice precinct to eat their lunch in. And the walls will stop desperate public servants from parking around the Oaks. There’s a longer-term plan to build Windsor Walk properly, linking the Oaks to other bits of that area, which should be nice.
