you are here headquarters

The “You Are Here” festival is running in Civic from 8-18 March this year.

Word reaches The Eagle’s Nest that this year they’re going to be working their magic in the old Centrepoint newsagency on the corner of Petrie Plaza and City Walk.

It’s going to form the headquarters of this year’s events and will revel in the title of “The Newsroom”.

Great, I love this stuff happening right in the city. The empty shop fronts are so sad.

The You Are Here Festival is a testing ground for future McDonalds venues.

According to my research, this time next year that place will be a Macdonald’s.

Unfortunately it looks like the souvenir store will be gone soon, thus dashing You Are Here’s dreams of offering high quality local performance in unusual spaces alongside affordable, high quality belt buckles.

Interestingly, every single one of the Centrepoint shops EXCEPT for the newsagents has now been leased. It’s just a question of when the new owners take occupancy.

@astrojax, a number of the outside empty shops appear to have been leased and there are some shop fitouts going on. No idea what it’s like inside though.

does anyone know exactly what’s going on with centrepoint? it has been leaking into oblivion for a few years now, but i’d like to know if there are grand plans for the site.

History suggests the owners will drive out retailers, demolish the building and redevelop as a combination of apartments, retail and office space.

They could expand into the old Godori shop, (RIP), and probably the other way into some other shop that has closed down – such is the dire state of our city centre.
