Young Artists offered $500 grants

ArtsACT are calling for young artists to apply for $500 grants.

These grants are designed to assist young artists with an activity that will develop their arts practice. Activities could include promotion costs, materials, documentation, and venue and equipment hire costs associated with an arts activity. Funding cannot be used for artists’ fees.

One suspects this is as much about training young artists in the ways of grants programs as anything else.

The idea of supporting artists based on if they are emerging, mid-career or established is in itself questionable to link it to calender age is in my opinion bordering on discriminatory. From the patron/audience/viewers point of view surely it does not matter if an artwork is made by a 20 or 50 year old. Or if they have been practicing for a week or five decades.

Considering it from a cynical economic point of view I have only ever been able to find one reason for youth grants – bang for your buck. From my experience I have observed that the young are more willing to work for less. They will make extraordinary efforts in the hope of it leading to bigger better things.

This is of course a case of sour grapes as I am ten years older than a young artist is allowed to be. Youth grants are clearly a case of youth being wasted on the young.

A small disclaimer. I can’t get the link to work or find the quoted document online so this is written on the basis of JB’s post. If I do find I’m eligible I’ll be there in line applying with the rest of my mates.
