Your chance to see bits of Buddha

By johnboy - 27 May 2010 15

According to Joy Burch body parts of Buddha himself are in Canberra and can be seen at the Belconnen Arts Centre this afternoon.

Yes my mind is boggling too.

Tomorrow and on Saturday they’ll be on display from 9am to 9pm at the the Sri Lankan Buddhist temple in Kambah (mind boggles again).

Ms Burch urged all Canberrans to attend and learn more the sacred relics, which are believed to be fragments of Buddha’s bones and more than 2500 years old, before they moved on to another city as part of the national tour.

“Although other Buddhist relics have been shown in Australia, this is the first time Australia will permanently house such valuable relics.”

So there you go.

What’s Your opinion?

Jim,

at no stage did I believe that it was the prophet’s beard. I should have put sacasm tags on the post. And yes, there are so many nails from the true cross that you could melt them down and build a battleship 🙂

Are these actually fragments of Buddha’s bones?

I’ve looked for research into this very topic and like most religious artifacts it’s hard to find anyone willing to let the scientists touch them. They’ll talk about miraculous activity but won’t let you run them through the spectrograph.

Are there any Buddhist scientists on the Riot who have any idea about what’s going on with relics?

I was waiting for that one. Feels like it sometimes….

Why? Is is very dry and hard?

Only during the cold weather.

I vaguely remember an old history professor saying something like: “If you traveled the globe and got all the pieces of the ‘true cross’ together, you’d be able to build a two-story house with the wood.

That doesn’t work for Buddha relics. They spontaneously increase in volume all the time. They’re like yeast, after a while you can break some off and give it to a friend.

I sniffed a part of Mohommad’s beard in Istanbul.

Seriously. And it is really important to the people to visit that particular mosque to do so.

I have the knucklebone from Jesus’s right hand to sell you. If the price is too high, I have a smaller knucklebone (which came from when he was a child) for a slightly cheaper price.

Saw the tooth relic in Sri Lanka in a temple about 10 years ago, Kandy I think. They take it very seriously, full on airport type security and lots of people even outside of celebration/sacred time.
Hard to say really what’s inside the vessels but it it floats your boat spiritually then who are we to argue.

Thats what relics are supposed to be.

As to veracity? Well that’s a whole other argument. But people definitely believe they are real.
