With the RiotACT readership so richly blessed by special people we thought this might be of interest to some of you:

The MENTAL HEALTH FOUNDATION ACT

is calling for participants for a new theatre project.

Please pass on to anyone who might be interested:

DRAMATIC RECOVERY

Have you ever experienced any form of mental illness?
Do you like theatre?
Would you like to use theatre to fight stigma and improve services for people who experience mental illness?

DRAMATIC RECOVERY is a Forum Theatre project in which people who have experienced mental illness create short plays that illustrate the challenges

of living with mental illness. Members of the audience can then intervene in these plays to find better ways for our community to deal with mental health and mental illness.

Who can be involved?

Anyone who has experienced any form of mental illness, whether in the past or today. No previous acting experience is needed. There are no auditions, but there will be a short interview before being accepted into the project.

How much time will it take?

We will rehearse for 6 hours a week between late July and early October, probably in 2 blocks of 3 hours each. Rehearsal times and places will be set to suit participants.

When will the performances be?

Performances will be between October 1 and October 17, to coincide with Mental Health Week.

Where will performances be held?

In different venues around Canberra.

Does it cost?

No. Involvement is free, and participants will be paid a small fee to cover travel and other expenses.

What’s the deadline for being involved in the project?

July 20, 2012 but the sooner the better.

Interested?

I thought most plays I’ve seen including some very old ones, touch upon these themes anyways so it’s no suprirse to me to think that these things would mesh. Human nature and all that.

Mental health and amateur theatre. Better still, there’s the promise of audience participation. I feel depressed all of a sudden, doctor.

Great project and besides breaking down stigma, should give insights for those of us who are fortunate enough to be on the “saner” side of the spectrum (and don’t think you aren’t on that same spectrum, Rugby Podcasters/Beer Reviewers!)

It certainly is nice to think that I’m considered special by the RA Overlords. Oh, wait….
