The Economic Development Directorate is asking for your thoughts on their plans for the London Circuit footpaths around University Avenue.

The retaining wall is to be removed and new stairs are to be constructed along the building line. The kerb also pushes out into the roadway and a five metre wide lower level footpath is created.

Improving pedestrian accessibility means removing the two trees planted at the back of the retaining wall. Two mature replacement trees will be planted on the widened lower footpath.

The recommended tree removal will occur when construction begins in April 2012.

You’ve got until 8 February 2012 to let them know what you think.

I know this will never happen but I would like to see tunnels connecting the east side of the circuit to the west side. That way some of the unused greenspace in the middle might become accessible to people – and catching up with friends for lunch would be easier for me 🙂

I think putting northbourne under the hill is the way to go and linking the city to and open space and the lake, or course this won’t happen because a developer will off the government a paltry amount of money to redevelop the land.

Tunnels are a crappy idea for civic, they’ll fill up with the homeless and/or the really scary and you’ll worry you’re about to get mugged everytime you use them. but perhaps a pedestrian overpass? That being said, even in the middle of town the traffic isn’t really so bad the crossing the road become’s an issue.
