The Health Directorate is asking for public feedback on their Consultation Draft Stage 3 Model of Care for new Adult Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit at Canberra Hospital.

Stage 3 represents the final stage in the development of the Model Of Care (MOC) and describes the clinical and support system to assist a person and their carers during times where adult acute inpatient care is needed.

This follows previous consultations on Stages 1 and 2 of the development of the MOC for the new Adult Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit (AAMHIU).

I reckon most people are OK with satire, comedic ridicule, slang references etc, as long as that topic is not important to them.

I’ve had family members and friends experience mental health issues, and I’ve had problems myself after a particularly horrifying (in my view) marital breakup. There were a couple of times I thought I’d be better off in the nuthouse myself…errmm…I mean mental health support facility. To me, the terminology doesn’t matter a bit.

Quite right, absolutely appalling.

According to Macquarie Dictionary the preferred Australian spelling is “Loony” without the “e”.

Please correct it.

Johnboy – I’m sorry, but your use of the term “Looney Bin” to describe the new Mental Health Unit is appalling. Mental Health patiens have enough negative stigma without terms like this being bandied about carelessly and thoughtlessly.

Please be a bit more considerate.

Really got this one wrong johnboy!!! I would suggest changing the title asap.

Are you aware of how terrifying it is to be placed in a care facility (often against your will), let alone having to deal with the stigma it creates when you return to employment/study. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in Australia, often this is preventable if people feel that they are about to discuss their feelings with out fear of loss of social currency/employment/self esteem. Stigma is the main reason people do not speak up. Way to reinforce the message. Go you.

Points for actually mentioning the call for feedback, but your points get removed and then some from the way to present the request. I am having to struggle very much not to use multiple expletives in this post and I need to mention that this is the first time I have been moved to comment on anything on this site. Very saddening.

🙂 nicely articulated.

(i love you! haha)

I too think the title further stigmatises mental illness. It is not about being politically correct, more about being mature and sensitive. Reports relating to mental illness should fall in the guidelines set by mindframe http://www.mindframe-media.info/ and I don’t feel as though the title here does that.

You can report the wording of the title to sane.org stigma watch for those of you who feel it stigmatises mental illness.

I’m a big fan of RIOTACT rarely comment but always read. Shame to read this today, I too expect better.

It’s about freakin time… Lets stop wasting Police and the Court’s time and money by needlessly processing these people through the system again and again… Better for all involved…

With which side of the debate?

I was agreeing with INFP, at the time I wrote it there was only 1 reply to the topic.

I always forget about the delay in comment approval. Should really remember to quote!

Setting aside JB’s crass subject heading, I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the new model, INFP.

I haven’t seen the mental health unit so I can’t comment much. Also, it’s a LONG read!
But I think the picture of the angry man in the Current/Future Journey illustration probably could have been drawn with a frown rather than a smile. He looks evil, rather than angry. Also he disappears between the Current Journey and Future Journey. Or perhaps he just changed his pants…

Sorry, I meant to say he disappears between outpatient and inpatient care.

Wow. I’m shocked at the insensitivity of this heading. Well done on continuing the stigmatisation of mental illness there, Riot Act.

+1 from me.

You’re shocked by irreverence and naughtiness on the Riot Act? Don’t worry, I’m sure John-Boy self-identifies as a loon of the first order.

I….. It is not helping anyone by using jovial yet stigmatising terms like looney bin to describe these units which are saving lives. Not everyone in there is a “looney”… but thanks for the mass label.

From you, johnboy, i expect more maturity and sensitivity :\

agreed.

I am not usually one for political correctness sucking the fun out of things…

So you’re okay with being politically incorrect as long as it’s an issue that doesn’t concern you personally? Isn’t that a little hypocritical?

How did my statement imply that? Perhaps poor wording on my behalf, but what i meant was i am not one to take political correctness to the extreme… (as in i dont take life too seriously to the point where i cant laugh at myself for example)

but i will still stand up against things i deem too inappropriate, and YES even if it doesnt concern me personally. nice assumption though. i’ve debated many issues which have nothing to do with me specifically.. just because this one happened to be something i can relate to does not mean i only speak up when i take offense personally. got it?

god, i hardly ever post on this forum because so many of you are fans of drama and bullshit. so quick to pounce on someone and attack one part of what they have said, and ignoring the actual premise of their post. fine example here with you and alaninoz.

@ TOOL: “Looney” may be used to define someone of unsound mind, but the term “looney bin”…. think about it…. now look at the second word “bin”. Ie. somewhere you discard refuse… a place you throw shit out basically…. so looney bin is pretty much suggesting that its a place to literally discard the mentally ill in society.

notice how i have an issue with the whole phrase looney bin, not just the word looney :\

Au contraire, we let footballers out of the Sin Bin after 10 minutes!

And the Blood Bin as soon as they’re cleaned up.

couldn’t agree more.

So, you’re in favour of stigmatising people unless it applies to you? Just asking.

Looney is defined in part as crazy/insane, insane is defined as not of sound mind or deranged. It seems the word is quite appropriate.

Yes I have stayed there myself several times due to depression and breakdowns. It is not helping anyone by using jovial yet stigmatising terms like looney bin to describe these units which are saving lives. Not everyone in there is a “looney”… but thanks for the mass label.
