You're being watched at the Stadium in Bruce

Simon Corbell has found some more good news to announce on his way to caretaker mode.

This time it’s a new CCTV system at Canberra Stadium.

During major sporting events the Canberra Stadium CCTV system will be controlled at a purpose-built venue command centre, with all footage also recorded at a secondary site. It will also be linked into the ACT CCTV Monitoring Centre to be built at the Winchester Police Centre in Belconnen.

“The CCTV system uses state-of-the-art technology, including high-definition 16 megapixel digital cameras with facial recognition capability, to provide comprehensive coverage of the stadium and its surrounds,” Mr Corbell said.

Apparently this will make the stadium a more attractive venue for international sporting events.

If it encourages higer profile events, great. Keeps the hooligans out, or at least gives them one last time to act the goat. I don’t think Canberra stadium was dangerous by any means, but you never know. Billy Bogan could have a gripe with Warren Westie cause he’s barracking for some inner city sydney footy team and then push come to shove. They should be able to cool it down before it escalates, or show his ugly mug on the news. Seems they’re trying to make it more family oriented. But not much beats being half cut at the footy with you mates and half a pie in your on your front cause your team just scored.

16 megapixel woot! My new camera phone is 2.5!

“ACT CCTV Monitoring Centre”

So is the role of this centre limited to the stadium and cameras in Civic, or can we expect the ACT to move closer towards a Panopticon? I’ve noticed that you can’t drive around the embassy district without being watched…

At the last Brumbies home game this year I saw a bloke climb onto the top of the grandstand and dance around for a good 5 minutes. Despite all of the security guards spotting him, he did a houdini and somehow vanished into the crowd leaving the security guards scratching their heads.

better big brother watching us than having to watch big brother…

seriously, though, these sort of facilities are pretty common in stadia the world over and assist in identifying hoodlums and organised troublemakers at major events and has contributed, it is claimed, to the significant reduction in violent crowd behaviour at european (esp english) football stadia. just smile and wave.

Doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

What is to stop the CCTV operators from watching the game when they should be doing their job? Hopefully linking this to the headquarters will stop CCTV footage “disappearing” when it is needed.

Does this mean Big Brother is watching us?
Or we all must do what Simon says?
