Elections ACT are celebrating a record enrolment of 256,702 electors for October’s date with destiny.
Sadly the yoof have dealt themselves out of the game, perhaps because so few of them pay rates, or maybe just that they’re smart enough to not encourage our local politicians with attention:
“There are 256,702 electors on the roll for this election – an increase of 13,231 on the 243,471 who were enrolled for the last election in 2008,” the ACT Electoral Commissioner, Mr Phillip Green, said today.
“In 2012, 132,287 females and 124,415 males will be eligible to vote,” Mr Green said.
“A total of 3435 electors who will be 18 on polling day are enrolled to vote, estimated to be around 67% of all eligible 18-year-olds in the ACT. A total of 3165 electors will be 19 on polling day, estimated to be around 56% of eligible 19-year-olds,” Mr Green said.
To our younger reader’s who’ve missed out this time I’d like to again stress that if you are not enrolled to vote political agendas will be increasingly framed to favour the interest of people who are not you.
It doesn’t matter so much which way you vote, it matters that powerful people will try to win your vote.
