Ask RiotACT: Yr 11 and 12 School/College recommendation for student with Asperger’s

By Carrie - 7 January 2018 20

Ask RiotACT

Hi Rioters,

Anyone have any advice for a mum with a son with Asperger’s – academically very high functioning but socially shy and anxious?

She is moving to the ACT and is looking for the best college (for year 11 and 12 doing tertiary studies) that is supportive and protective of students with Asperger’s.

I was looking to get advice from the Autism Asperger ACT organisation but it appears to have closed down.

If anyone can assist with recommendations it would be appreciated.

Cheers.

Thanks very much for all of your replies. The family are planning to live in the Hawker area in Belconnen. I have passed on all recommendations for them to investigate further. Much appreciated.

If Northside then St. Francis Xavier College in Florey. If Southside then Trinity Christian School. Public Colleges are very hit and miss, unfortunately. Some people have brilliant experiences – others have horrendous experiences.

St Edmund’s College ... inclusion, support and genuine care — definitely worth checking out ... contact Emma Rameke or Leonie Owens 😊

Trinity Christian School is good for that - academically tight and a great team of teachers for special needs etc.

My pal, a teacher, found St Edmund's, Narrabundah, very supportive for her youngest who's on the spectrum.

Melba Copeland is a very quiet and caring college that attract lots of interesting kids for that reason. The school is very well set up to meet these kind of needs. Also the student population has a strong culture of acceptance

Canberra College in Phillip

It will depend on where they end up living. If in the Woden area, my son had a very positive experience at Canberra College.

Autism Asperger ACT didn't shut down exactly. It merged with Marymead in late 2016. Their unit at Marymead may be able to assist.
